Listing track names & artists from CDs

Does anyone know how to get track names / artists etc from CDs automatically into a database?
Is there a certain programme that does it, if so details of where it can be found/price etc would be much appreciated! :beer:

Or do I have to type each track and artist from every CD into a database? :angry:

If your copying your discs to computer use a CDDB based programme like gracenote or CDDB2 if your just after info there are quiet a few programmes that have been mentioned on various threads beforehand

If your just wanting to copy the artists/tracks to a database, I may be able to help. We paid quite a bit of cash for our "LRS" (Live Request System) which we had made especially for us, for our requirements, this includes a very simple VB program that does just what you want.

I will have to have the progam tweaked if you want to use it, as it runs specificly with our database and PHP program, but what sort of database are you wanting to insert the details into? MySQL or MS Access DB?

That's abit over my head! :embarasse It's just a nice simple database of the tracks & artisits I have. So it can be printed out, maybe loaded upto a website. Basically a quick reference list!! A bit like iTunes - which I see uses gracenote.

Ah ours, is an interactive system run over a network we use at most discos, giving the client access to all our music via networked "request stations" and us a powerful search function, giving us CD, disc, track and duration information about each track on screen :)

They can :). We only use it for the rough youths, who really just want a browse and enjoy it, most of the requests are from drunk teens requesting rubbish.

For the more genuine requests, it gives us a good idea of what they want to hear, on average we get about 80 requests in an evening using it :)

Oh...and its refrence for us...like "ah wheres such and such a song" *type type type* Ah! computer says (not "nooooo") "Now 43 Disc 1 Track 4 (3 mins and 50 secs)"

I could see that being a real problem with people getting arsey, asking why have you got all this technology and you still haven't played my request.

80 tunes, so around 4 hours worth of requests then - might be a bit tight for time then!

They tend to forget they have forgotten about it. It's something I wouldn't ever consider if we started doing weddings or 30th birthdays without it being requested by the client.

Next time I have the server plugged in at home I'll show you Daz.

I use CATraxx and it is very good.....

I then export it to Excel and have it available on my website for people to download before a gig (B&Gs if they wanna have a browse) plus I bring it on a standalone PC with me so I can find stuff quickly on the night....

Interesting thread. Yes you need a good gracenote or cddb application, but that is not always enough. For compilation albums, it often lists as Various Artists - Track 1, 2 etc, which then requires tedious and prohibitive editing.

Also one various artist approach will not be the same as others , some with have dashes, commans, etc, all designed to muck your neatness up.

MY solution, I use the [insert name when I get in tonight cos I cant remember it] package. Yes, this recovers the standard various artist mess from the naming services, but deep within its structere it does successfully extract out each artist and song title name for all compilation albums. Since its operates an MS Access database, I have been able to write a routine, to extract this, along with the file name, convert to a standard string, and rename all the tracks and the primary database fields accordingly. Took a bit of work, but now Im all neat and tidy in smart fixwed width columns :)
