Well summer has gone and into the quiet bit.

Yeah right. Not sure what has happened, but its been a very very good year and despite having NYE cancelled (which I am actually really pleased about) we have really moved forward. September, October, November and December are record years. In terms of turnover September is 32% higher than our best ever year, October 105% higher, November 178% higher and December 51% higher.

It really has got very busy and proves you can do this as a part time concern and still be respected for your service, standards and professionalism. It also proves to me it would be really difficult to make it work full time.

We have done very little advertising and word of mouth and the web site now carry the business. We will attend 4 to 5 wedding fayres during the back end of 2011 and front end of 2012, which should drive things further. The beauty is we are at them all free as we will provide sound and light to the catwalk and also the ambient background with Kev's swing vocal during the wedding fayre in general (works really well).

I am not willy waving, just sharing an upside story built through recession.

However, here is the downside when taken in context of a DJ forum. I have to say only 35% of the years business was as a DJ only. The combination of vocalist and DJ has really started to find its market and next year 80% of our bookings are already on this basis.

Thanks Shaun :beer1:

I added the last paragraph as a chain of thought for some of the lads who have been considering selling up etc. A lot of singers really don't want to DJ and would rather sing and then mingle a bit and get off home way before 1am (with us it works really well as I do the DJ bit). Is it worth getting onto some of your local vocal artists and even bands and seeing if you can become their recommended DJ, or agree a fixed fee with them to be their DJ support. The band or singer will generally be booked prior to the DJ

You will find your fee will need to be lower, but why sell all of your kit when there are outside of the box solutions that can be investigated. Better than no income on a weekend.

I have to say that does not really surprise me. The concept of DJ services being an 'add-on' (and not just to a band) seems to be ripe.

Great to hear your doing well and long may it continue :)

Congratulations Neil....you went off on a tangent ...and it worked.

Bit of luck too....as I understand it you and Kev have homed in as a Micheal Buble tribute act.You happened to choose the most talented popular middle of the road singer on the planet.....good choice. This has to be central to your success.I use Michael as buffet music and background music...he has universal appeal....

I'm not a regular poster anymore but am amazed at the amount of young DJ's jacking it...whats wrong with everyone....???

£60 a night is a lot of cash when you're 14 ;)

Thanks for the positive vibes everyone.

Got a couple of big wedding fayres coming up at the end of September so hopefully plenty more for next year.

Vectis - I still need to do the rewording for the website. Its on the agenda and is definitely needed as hits have sunk away a lot. I am on with it, but its hard work with the full time job, gigging every weekend, trying to keep on top of specifics for each gig and then drive things forward too. Oh yeah and with two kids under five to contend with and house maintenance on top.
