Ok,

So after someone saying that they don't really like my website, I would be very keen to know what the general concensus is.

Do you like it ? Why and what about it....

What don't you like and why - how could it be improved ???

As always I love constructive feed back as without it we cannot move forward.

Ralph your site is fine buddy, and I would take the comment that was said with a pinch of salt. The only thing missing is a few gig pics and testimonials.

I would personally ditch any vocals on the site.

Thats a nono for any other site I would visit - far too intrusive.
The whole power of the internet is that its a user selective resource (unlike the TV for example)
and audio is more effective at creating a reaction than our eyes on a subconscious level.

You do not also seem to have any photos of you in action just a big nightclub and some stock images.
For someone who has been Djing for 15 years I would expect to see lots of photos of you in action.

Not a bad start though. :) Nice to see a photo of you on it.

I agree with Toby about the audio, I'd ditch that if I were you. The picture of the nightclub on your homepage imo, is a bit misleading to the services you actually supply, maybe an image of your rig would be better?

People opening your website initially might be put off by the fact they think you do big nightclub installs? just a thought.

All in all though it's a nice design I think, just needs a few tweaks here and there :)

Some pretty serious faults with the markup might prevent the search engines from doing a thorough spidering ...

Also the all-important meta data is incomplete.

And get the markup into an external CSS file to prevent it diluting your HTML to text ratio.

Within the markup ditch the "style32" and "style34" etc. and replace with the standard header tags H1, H2, H3 - then style these as appropriate. Header tags get more gravitas with the search engines.


Fix these and you'll be on your way, because the design ain't bad :)

If you were booking a disco would you like to see what is being offered? I don think there is a single picture of any of your performances or happy dancing punters having a good time.

I would change the type font - times roman looks old fashioned and it harder to read on the screen than a font such as you are reading now.

I agree with the comments made so far about the voice over on the front page. Personally I'd drop any audio on any website.

I'd also expand on the "Services" page to include more details about what you can offer for each event, possibly with photos of similar events you've done in the past (to show the client the standard of presentation that they're going to get if they book). I jumped straight to this page when I entered your site to see what you could offer and didn't really get anything from it at all - you do parties and weddings - I could have guessed that :D

When I checked it, folowing the comment you refer to, I had the audio off, so didn't notice it. I'd strongly recomnmend losing the audio, as it's always distracting, especially if the person who arrived at your site is using the PC to play their own music.

I thought the site itself was fine, with no major faults, and completely fit for purpose.


As to getting work from it, Vectis has explained it, but for all I understand of it, it might as well be in Urdu! :o :o :o :o :o

Guys thanks for this, I designed it and built myself so am quite pleased for the warm reception, but equally grateful for all your feedback which I will take on board and make the changes.

With this and Vectis' advice on CSS and meta tags I should be able to clean up the South of all discos !!!!

In seriousness, research each of the four pointers I've given you individually. There will be some trial and error involved unless you can find someone who has 'been there, done that' to help out.

Sadly I'm not in a position to offer that at the moment.

By the way ... the hints were based on a sub-60 second assessment of your landing page. There's more that needs attention, particularly spelling and grammar...

So after some suggestions and comments I have changed the home page slightly and want to know what you guys think...

new page: www.disco-magic.co.uk/Test

This is what I have done.
1) Removed the picture of the nightclub and replaced it with a flash movie consisting of images and testimonials

2) Changed the font from Times New Roman to Arial

3) Removed the audio introduction

4) Moved my brand logo to the right of the header.

5) recoded the meta tag code into the "body" script.


What do you guys think? what do you think of the Flash movie? My wife suggested that she liked the nightclub better because it was bright and colourful, but then ........?????

1. If you're working on 'new' content on a live site, make sure you use the noindex, follow meta tag for the duration of development. You don't want Google coming along and thinking it's a live page and indexing it, potentially placing it higher than the equivalent "real" page and potentially nobbling your ranking for having duplicate content.

2. I first viewed the new page on my iPad which of course doesn't support Flash and was greeted with a large black block of nothingness. That would be the case for a large minority of visitors (maybe 20%+ ?)

3. When I looked at the Flash animation on a mac, it doesn't do anything that you couldn't achieve with a more cross-platform compatible gallery script such as the many jQuery add-ons.

4. Looking at the code there are two major aspects I would change before publishing - a) get the styling into an external css file; b) get rid of the tables in favour of <div>'s. And then get the <div> styling into the same css file.

5. I've not gone through the actual page content but suffice to say that if you're trying to appeal to the wedding market, listen to womens' opinions on how the site looks ;)

Sort out the above and you'll have a nice-looking, Google-friendly page :beer1:

Will try and put it into practice over the weekend, but I am struggling re the CSS and using <div> tags as tables are the only way I know how to build a website, but I'm willing to learn... YouTube tutorials here we go!!! :):)

.... and that is why I am looking to change it :p ... after people's feed back from the MDD... :)

However regarding your analagy.... I would have to argue, whilst an Mercedes Dealer won't have a BMW on its home page it might have a top of the range S class or SLS...

Simularly, don't some clients want to have the biggest and best disco experience possible - perhaps of the same ilk as a nightclub? That was my thinking behind the orginal image.

Never say never! - that is to say that I could, but would have bring in external suppliers which would possibly cost more for the client, but that's a very good point Angela... And another reason why I am changing...

I meant, that in my considerable experience in my own disco business and lots of other peoples', that not many clients go looking for the "nightclub experience" - because generally speaking those who do are planning the ultimate 18th or 21st party and when they see the bill they either change their mind or just go down to an actual nightclub!

Indeed generally they do BUT the few that want to do it correctly don't mind paying the fair rate for putting on such a show and boy are they good fun!
