The 3ft Stage Dilemma?

I really hate those high stages you get in some WMC's and village halls. They are so impersonal and I like to be close to the audience.

Unless there really isn't much room on the actual main part of the room, I prefer to set up lights and speakers on the stage, but have my console on the floor to one side of the stage.

What do you do ?

On the flip side I've not done a stage like yours since last Christmas for the GPE at the racecourse.

Well lads, for me the default setting is "Take the high ground". If they want to speak to me ( which I always actively encourage ) there's usually steps somewhere.

If there's a stage, why wouldn't you use it? That's what it's there for :confused:

I did my first venue with a stage for years last weekend, and set up the booth on the floor with the lights and speakers on the stage. On this occasion, there were no steps to the stage, however, I would have chosen to set up in this way regardless.

I prefer to be on a stage or raised platform. That way there's not much chance of drunken numpties falling over and crashing into your kit;)

If there is a way I can avoid being on the stage myself I will. I like to be in the thick of it and feel its easier for creating the atmosphere if I'm not raised up away from the action, however, I do think that the set-up looks good when its up on a stage. I will do pretty much the same as others if i can...i.e. put most of the kit on the stage and the booth on the ground level. Got awayl with it last night, there was a stage and I said to the band "do you want the stage?" and they said "yes please" so that solved that one.

Althou 95% of my gigs are not on a stage i would prefer a stage anytime because i can see all the room better and the normal drunken customers banging into your equipment or Kids running around thinking its a school play ground

But only if they negotiate the barriers and security staff ? ;)

If there is a stage, I always use it. The only exception is when booked with bands when I am more likely to offer them the stage and set up playout in front but to one side.

I take the point that the stage can set you away from drunken idiots but on the other hand you'll often get the one that is going to come and bug you where ever you are and then if you are on a stage and they try to pull themselves up by using the front of your show or a tripod it could be very dangerous. If I am on a stage and its at all possible I will always set up a couple of feet back from the front to stop that happening, thing is then it leaves them plenty of room to get up but at least they aren't pullling with all their weight on the kit.

If I am on a stage and its at all possible I will always set up a couple of feet back from the front to stop that happening, thing is then it leaves them plenty of room to get up but at least they aren't pullling with all their weight on the kit.

The trouble with that idea is it leaves a nice place for drunken people to dance on the edge of the stage...
