Made a heartbreaking decision today.I am going to sell the vw beetle and buy a van for the business.This would be so much more practical and i believe its a wise move.
I have been hiring vans the last few weeks but at £50 a day id be better of buying my own

So which van do you recommend....................

I was thinking about mercedes vito,vauxhall vivaro,ford transit.

We just brought a 2003 citroen relay hdi transit van. Its extremely good and had no problems with it yet, also it depends on what size van you what ours is really quite big.

Got a Peugeot Partner (which is basically the same van as the Dispatch), They're a little smaller than a Vito, but they are a real workhorse.

There is also the Fiat Scudo , all the same , I sold the roof rack to mine , a guy drove up in a Fiat Scudo , same fittings , direct swap over.

I recently bought a four year old Tranny on low mileage for my sons Rodeo Bull business and so far brilliant.

We did a lot of research and it was the only van that did not really get much negative feedback.

About 18p a mile hammering it fully loaded on diesel and plenty of room with three front seats.

Great to drive with 5th gear on Motorways.

For smaller set ups my Old gal --the Ford Galaxy is a winner providing you take all the seats out.;)

Depending on driving :daft: can be as good as 15p a mile with 6 gears. :beer1:

I think you will find the Transit has more room than the Vivaro/ clones.

I have a Primastar, which is the same as the Trafic, Vivaro etc

It's fast, economic, comfortable and has a great driving position and loads of room, though mine is the LWB.

I'd buy another one tomorrow.

Highly recommended.

Watching this thread with interest as I have been looking for a van. Back in the day I had a Mk2 Transit 120 and it was superb apart from the rust.

Am thinking Expert/Dispatch/Scudo would be the ideal size for me but would prefer Peugeot/Citroen over Fiat as they have a different engine.

Never seen the Nissan variant of the Movano/Traffic but that also looks interesting.

I currently have a Ford Galaxy so will probably use that until I am fully re-established. Currently it looks like you can get a lot more people carrier for your money than you can a van, especially when you realise there is another 20% VAT to go on the advertised price of the van.

Transit - just cant beat it for reliability and cheep parts - well the older ones anyway - my mark 3 cost me £20.00 on 2005. ran it till last year without spending any money on it except for exhaust downpie and 1 tyre.

Last year had the engine fully rebuilt cost £550.00 - is now just about run in and runs sweet as a baby - gentle use on teh acelorator pedal and cruisin around teh 55mph mark and regually getting 38 to the gallon fully loaded. but abuse it and it will drop to 12mpg ( 2ltr pinto ).

It goes in tomorrow to have teh front end rebuilt - its not to scabby at the moment altho teh front wheel arches are bad - but on MOT we found teh front chassis member was rotted thru.

so 2 x front wheel arches
2 x the panel that site just in front
both parts of the front chassis member
both headlamp holdrs ( as were they weld to teh crossmember is pretty thin)

cost me £79.00 + to have it all cut out and welded back in place £300.00 :)

no fancy compters or ECus to go wrong
cam belt replacement is a 30 min job

A bit more tidying and a respray and its good as new :) and i know its gonna last another 100,000 miles :)

round here teh mark 3 are going for silly money recently turned down £1600 for mine as it stands :)

I use a Citroen Relay 1.9d, X reg 2000. Nearly done 100,000 and just had a front crossmember welded in for mot as well as 3 minor welds.
Low ratio gearbox and 3,000rpm at 55mph but engine sounds sweetwith 33mpg average. I do not thrash it. Very basic van that I fill when using a big rig. Pic is 1/2 full rig.

If, like me, you dont have a ton of gear, just buy a decent sized people carrier.

I use a ford galaxy. If required all the rear seats come out.

I get all the gear for a normal gig in the back without taking the back seats out.

You are right Dave, there is loads of space in a Galaxy. My mate used to have one and he could get a lot of gear in after removing the rear seats.

I really wouldn't recommend using a people carrier or any kind of vehicle without some kind of bulk head.

If you have to break hard and there's nothing in between you and the gear, you are going to be in serious trouble.
