At BPM I liked the look of the stanton controller with the screen built in but thought the screen was slightly small.
is there anything screen wise thats slighty bigger that would work with a midi controller rather than carrying a laptop around all the time
or a small and compact unit that could be rack mounted

I've looked at most options on the market to find a laptop alternative (and I checked out the Stanton at BPM) - but found nothing so far that's as easy to work with as a laptop based play-out in regards screen size and the amount of information viewable.

Obviously it's personal choice but the way I work I like having a screen full of tracks to choose from and multiple playlists ready to click onto for inspiration (I often have no idea what I'm playing one track to the next until I see it).

Generally speaking I hate hard drive players, I don't know why, but I've just never got on with them. I prefer to use my laptop and a midi controller. We had a demo of the Stanton unit at last months NADJ Yorkshire meeting and I've got to say, I really like it. There's a few niggles ie. no mic eq, the beat sync goes off very quickly and the file analysing takes forever! But these can and possibly will be sorted out with future firmware upgrades. The way you can use it as a midi controller for the laptop too is also a bonus.
