Been Offered Mackie 1501 Active Subs but they need repairing..

Just some advice please but apologies in advance for the lack of information.

I have been speaking to someone who has absolutely stacks of equipment that is slowly winding down his Disco & Hire business. The long and the short of it is that he has a pair of Mackie 1501 Active Subs that have been used once but need repairing due to a power surge at a venue. He has not got round to getting them repaired. They are 2 years old, still in the box and in pristine condition.

Now, these are what I want to compliment the SRM450's. The price he is selling these at is stupidly low. I know a guy who repairs speakers etc for a living so I need to firstly find out what the problem is and also how much it will cost to fix it.

Has anyone had a pair that have had problems (maybe a power surge too?) and have had to have them repaired? I'm guessing that maybe they were under warranty?

I need to find out some more information from the seller before I make a decision as to whether I get them or not. At the end of the day, towards the end of the year or early 2012, I will have some anyway but I can't really miss out on this if it's all cool.

Just do a search on '1501' Gary, read em and weep (well most of 'em).

I'm in the bargepole camp and I've never owned any. Just been around the block often enough to hear the horror stories.

I can vouch for that as well. I had a speaker cabinet catch fire when I was doing a scooter rally in 1990. It wasnt one of mine, it was one I borrowed but quite scary to say the least !!!

1501's, dont get me started. Blue sparks flying out the back followed by big plumes of smoke was enough to scare the life out of me. Never again.

This wasn't an isolated incident. There was 2 times previously it failed and was sent off for repair.
