Speaker Stands!

Just finished setting up for tonight's joint 18th Birthday party. One of my speaker stands decided to break on me (the little tightener that secures the base was just twisting but not doing much).
I take loads of other backup stuff with me but never speaker stands (I will from now on!).
I'll go back a tad earlier tonight with another pair but just out of interest, are these easy enough to fix or is it just better to bin it?

Are they the light weight flimsy ones? Its always the tighter things that go on them.

I accidentlly ordered one in a rush from Blue aran and suffice to say its being swapped for a samson one.

I use the giraffe ones for my lighting rig as they are super solid and allot smaller than std lighting stands. They go very high.
Also try the samson mini ones. They are really small but equally as bomb proof!!
I always have four with me as I sometimes use them for other rooms and quad PA.

If you want them super high then get bigger ones but these go way over head height with rcf 310's which are small.

Personally I'd just buy a new stand - A repair might make it 'functional' but would it be safe?

It would depend on the design. Older stands I've got have a metal collar and the thread is cut into the collar. If the thread went I would suspect it would be a matter of cutting a new thread and getting a bigger screw to fit it. Every joint goes together with nuts and bolts so can easily be taken apart to repair.

Newer ones have a plastic collar and the tightener screws into a nut. I had the collar break on one and the "innards" fell out but if it hadn't of broken I couldn't see a way to easily get to it (you would have to find someway of removing the central pole) as most of the leg joints are riveted. Fortunately it was still under warranty and was replaced. But different makes may differ.

Sounds like the thread has gone--it might be possible to have rethreaded--involving someone who can undertake a simple tap thread operation--

If you think that has anything to do with the Bathroom buy a new pair.:confused:

I will have to undertake this eventually with my lightweight alloy stands at some point as the threads wont last much longer.

Matty the answer is YES to a safe repair as a new thread will be safer than an old very worn one.

OK then I would buy a new pair. They do not cost much as are the part of a rig most prone to falling over/damaging something/someone.

Thanks for the input guys. These were good ones and I always believe in the theory that if you are going to spend good money on speakers, you may aswell pay decent money for the things that hold them up!

These will be binned. I have another 3 pairs so it's not a problem. I thought it may be an easy to thing to sort, that's all.

Some are child's play to repair,merely requiring a nut replacing. Others require a full engineering workshop. Do you feel lucky? :D

you can either replace the nut or bolt - depending on which teh thread has gone on. one of my speakers stands did teh same thing a few weeks ago I used a spare wing nut from my lighting bar as a temp fix.
