So you think "Well that'll do me" Then when get there you find more than two thirds of the guests are under 30 and there's no chance they'll want to listen to that stuff all night.

I did a 60s/70s themed party but they didn't want 60s/70s music. Figure that!

This kind of things happens regular and to be honest a lot of punters dont know the difference between a 60's, 70's, 80's tracks.

I often get booked for 18th/21sts and unless specifically requested to play no old music I tend to play a selection of modern and classics like beatles, dirty dancing, jump around etc

I do theme nights, 'Number ones', "Soul & Reggae' and virtually every time someone will want something outside the theme - but I won't play it!

Very seldom do I get that with the retro genres I play - luckily most of my clients guests have impeccable taste as well!

I did a disco on Saturday 22nd for Yorkshire Friends Ralliers (Peter knows them - they are a caravanning group). Mostly aged 50+ and want oldies most of the night. They do however, have a few children with them (only half a dozen or so) so have to play some modern tracks for them to the disappointment of the mature guests.

They always go home happy though and I get an automatic booking for next year too :)

Doing a 13th birthday next week and a double 13th the week after that. Doubt I'll be able to get the 60's & 70's tracks out for them :(

Generally that is the way yes. Toni Basil works well round here though, as does the Grease Megamix.

Toni Basil? would never have thought but yes I reckon it could go down well and Grease megamix is a dead cert - would play this anyway probably. :)

I've had so many changes of music to what was originally planned.
An 18th Birthday, only for loads of adults turning up wanting 60's and 70's,
Or a serious playlist with 'specifically no cheese' stated, only to find on the night the client wanting a conga!
You've got to be ready for anything these days!

I've never had a client say what the OP has had said to him but I have had a few occasions where the party is a themed one and people have known that but they have still asked for current stuff or stuff that is not going with the theme.

I also had one occasion earlier this year where I did a 70's, Soul, Funk & Disco themed party. It was going ok but could have been much better. At one point during the night I was asked for some Indie and Current Chart stuff but advised the requestee that I had to keep to the theme of the party. I was then approached by a guy who asked for Bon Jovi because he was getting bored with the stuff I was playing. I told him the same.

Later on in the evening the birthday girl came over and commented that she was loving the music but wished that everyone else would get up and dance too. I kind of hinted that I had received requests for other stuff and she wouldn't have it at all. She wanted me to stick to the theme rigidly. I did so and thought that if I had just had a bit of room to add some of the requests in, it could have been a lot better.

Best one is when they say no talking on the mic - I want it to be like a club night - then they send you a playlist which is full of unmixabale 70s / 80 tracks your like how am i gonna link this all up !!!

I used to stand in for a pub karaoke disco night in Wallsend where the music was 60's, 70's and 80's. Requests for modern stuff would come in but the landlady wouldn't be too chuffed if they got played! And she was quite scary!! :eek:

Exactly the type of residency I used to do a few years ago. It was in a roughish area and they wanted to keep the "young 'uns" out as they were mainly the troublemakers so they wanted 60's, 70's & 80's too. If I played anything too modern and dancy, I used to get a stern glare from the landlord. :D
