Ok...quick history.

I'm using windows live mail (2009). I've been having problems with it hanging during searches etc. So, I backed up all the files and uninstalled the program ready to reinstall it. The problem is when I try to install again it's stating that I already have it installed (despite being uninstalled earlier). So I'm sitting without an email client at the moment.

I just need to figure out how to reinstall windows live mail again. Help!

Much thanks in advance.

How did you uninstall it Shaun? Add/remove programs from the control panel?

Shaun

From the Add Remove Programs. It's definitely uninstalled, I can't find any record of it anywhere on my system.

Restarted the computer since you uninstalled it? Some require a reboot to complete the process....

That was the first thing I did after uninstalling it. Same issue persists. :(

Erh...backup files on the same HD? Maybe its scanning them and expecting you to have the program installed? Other than that I'm stumped.

Yep, backup files are in a folder on the desktop. I'll try moving them over to my exteral HDD.

The ‘Complete’ Uninstall/Reinstall Method For Windows Live Mail (http://liveunplugged.wordpress.com/2008/05/24/the-complete-uninstallreinstall-method-for-windows-live-mail/)

I doubt the backup files being on the same drive are causing the problem, more likely to be registry values left over.

thanks Neil & Marc for the help so far.

I'll give that a go Marc. Just reading the steps now and saw this "Now navigate to your WLM Message Store folder** and rename it

Anyone know where the 'WLM Message Store Folder' is located?

Hmm....

Found this...though might not work it does give a few other options to try: -

This one looks a little more promising (maybe), found via http://windowslivehelp.com/thread.aspx?postid=8df0af87-11f7-414a-b84e-9f4fd38c76c6#8df0af87-11f7-414a-b84e-9f4fd38c76c6: -

Thanks again Marc. Unfortunately none of the links were any help.

Looks like I may need to do a windows re-install. :(

Did you do a registry search? usually under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/

Then delete the folder; Windows Live.

Sorry if this has been covered - I didn't look at all the links...:)

[edit] It may be wise to back up your registry before you make any changes as it can be a scary place to go...

Sounds very likely. If youre on a PC, try running ccleaner. I had the same problem a few weeks ago where a program wouldnt install, turns out it was a single reg entry stopping the program reinstalling.

Just realised your talking about live mail so it will be a PC lol

Yep, I'd done all that earlier. Went through all the steps gain earlier just incase i missed anything. All items relating to windows live mail have been removed from the registry but it still shows as installed when i try to reinstall it.

Shaun, I think I've figured out what's wrong...

You broke it.

That's a bit extreme. I know it's a relatively new installation of Windows but still...

One more to try, looks the most promising yet: -

Still no joy. Out of the list of files it said to search for I found 2 of them (Writer.msi & Mail.msi) in program files/common files. the link you posted instructs to uninstall them (which can be done by right clicking and selecting uninstall from the options). It won't uninstall though, just a windows installer message saying "This action is only valid for items that are currently installed".

Not sure if it'll be safe to just delete those files from that common files folder?

there's still further solutions further down the link, i'll have a read of those and see if they help. Thanks again Marc. :)

Tried running CCcleaner. That didn't solve it either. thanks anyway though. Appreciated the input.

No joy, Marc.

Went through everything twice and nothing worked. :( :(

If I can just a find an email client that will install all my windows live mail files, in the folders that are organised then that would be a quick fix for now. I did try my copy of Outlook (2003) but there is no option for importing live mail files.

I think I may have to bite the bullet and just re-install windows. :( :(

I'd suggest waiting until next time I'm over, but a) you might be in a hurry and b) I can't say when that will be and c) I'd only go through the same stuff anyway!

IIRC the trouble is you have to EXPORT from Windows Live Mail with Outlook installed on the same PC. Then when you open Outlook your email is all there. I don't know how big your WLM backups are, but if you can get them to me (Dropbox (http://db.tt/Xsr9Xha)?) I can bring them into WLM in my Win7, export to Outlook and send you back the Outlook PST file. Trouble is, my Outlook is (I think) the Office 2007 version.

Update. After spending the best part of a day on this I gave up and re-installed Windows again. Now comes the fun part of installing everything again.

Thanks to everyone that took the time to post help and advice. Very much appreciated. :) :beer1:
