It was reported in our local paper about 3 weeks ago that Liquid in Newbury and Basingstoke are going to close so this would explain that.

Well common knowledge they have been struggling for awhile plus they have a rather large lawsuit on their hands with the young girl dying at their club in Northampton last week.

I didn't see that one coming, their Edinburgh club is always busy, and I don't hear of any trouble there. I guess that's where they fall over - getting hit with big fines. And that is down to bad management - you need to know of all the rules and regulations that your club has to comply to, and have procedures in place to make sure of it.

Many reasons why. Outdated business model, expensive entries, price rises on peak weekends, poor drink selection, poor entertainment. The list goes on

I believe in the past their DJ's lost almost a months wages (a couple of years ago) when the sub-company they used as an agency, to pay the DJ's through, closed - sorry I can't explain that better! That would have been about August 2009 I think.

The Southampton one is huge, so filling it has been virtually impossible in the recent financial climate. I heard a few people at BPM who said they expected the company to go that weekend, so I wasn't surprised either.

I'd imagine that it will be phoenixed or someone will cherry-pick the better units for a new brand.

Making large entertainment venues pay is very difficult. I've owned an indoor soft-play business for 12 years, everyone thinks we make shed-loads of cash, the truth is far from that. We have one site left, it's 10,000 sq ft and we pay nearly £36,000 p.a. just in rates - imagine what the bill would be for a big club! Then think about what they would pay in rent, power, and wages!

Wasn't it eminence leisure that supplied the DJ's for Luminar. A few years ago they sold some clubs off to another company. I remember the issue when a lot of staff did not get paid for a while.

Indeed, I was in a facebook group for Luminar DJ's and there was a massive amount of DJ's chasing up fees because of the whole Eminence going pear shaped.

Yeah same here. I was in the same Facebook group and remember a lot of DJ's and LJ's getting pretty annoyed. Are eminence leisure of Luton still trading?

The one in Basingstoke (I went there on it's opening night and that was it), is apparently always busy but I have heard the same stories.
In fact, the Chicago Rock venue (now called Bar Rock) is owned by the same company (Luminar) and when I was doing a weekly Alternative wednesday night there 2 years ago, I had problems myself with getting paid and would sometimes wait up to 3 weeks so I was always behind and I couldn't work like that.

Maybe punters have now worked out that they are getting a rubbish deal too. Door prices and over inflated drinks prices etc don't help. I can't comment on Liquid but I know for a fact that Bar Rock used to do very silly and cheap drinks deals throughout the week. Funny thing was, they would always mysteriously be out of the drinks that were on the deals. It was something like £1.50 a pint but week in, week out...the draught was off so punters had to buy bottles (obviously more expensive). When they did deals on bottles (3 for £5.00 or something), they'd run out and they also kept changing the times that the deal was on for. I heard lots of people moaning about it as they'd go to the bar with their £5.00 for 3 bottles and end up paying just short of that for 1 bottle.

Our local one in Redhill also closed down - shame really - much of my mispent youth was spent there...

From the beginning of February - end of April this year, I DJ'd weekly in my local nightclub, owned by Luminar.

Although, I don't DJ there that regularly now, I am still on their books as a cover DJ and I am supposed to be DJ'ing there in a couple of weeks.

I have been told everything is ok and I will still be DJ'ing, so we shall see what happens.

Managers have been told that they are not to deal with cash upfront....

Managers (so far) aint listening and will happily pay upfront ;)

If Luminar is in administration, it means that the administrators will be trying to get every single penny they can for the business to either pay creditors or sell the business as a going concern, so I certainly wouldn't be putting invoices in and waiting for payment.
