View Full Version : Equipment faulty from new

I don't know if we've been extremely unlucky recently, but a large proportion of new stuff we've bought in recent months has been faulty out of the box.

Obviously, this is going to happen from time to time, but this is getting to epic proportions!

Does anyone else feel that they've been getting too much faulty new kit recently, or is it just our bad luck?

When i first ordered my Chauvet 4Play from new it was faulty... LED display not working so unable to set any DMX settings !! supplier sent out a new one and collected the other...

New one turns up and one of the fixtures was not working !! looked inside it (yes i know i may invalidate warranty) but all it was bad soldering of the connector, which i soon fixed and working fixture :)

Thank you

Glenn

I have been the same. Either it's faulty out the box or within a few days use it's faulty. Had problems with datamoons, scans, haze machine and even a mic stand.

I'm not having much luck with Computer RAM at the moment. I've just sent my third consecutive batch back as all were faulty.

Received new phone from Orange. Opened box and took phone out. Something inside phone rattling. Phone returned before even using.

You want something to work, buy German. I have a German car (it works). I have As much Sennheiser gear as I can (It works). New sound system just delivered from Germany (EV = Bosch) - not sure if it works yet, so may be tempting fate a bit.

There was a time when made in China was laughted at. I just about remember it as a kid and then they took over everything. I can see a return to this position happening. How many multinationals are going to keep accepting their goods being rubbished prior to moving their manufacturing. Call centres are coming back due to customer demand. Is the global power shift permanent?

A two tier product base will probably develop first as it is with some current luxury goods. The cost of many of these goods is that more skilled labour is used. Labour is always a majority cost in any process, any at all. Except DJ'ing where dry hire is more expensive than when you get a DJ too :-)

I have to say with all my dealings with couriers and seeing how they treat their load I wouldn't blame the product makers themselves straight away.

In my case the box was perfect and factory sealed.

I've just shouted at the dealer for having returned the sub 7 days ago and not opened the box to inspect so they can send me a new one. :muppet: :muppet: :muppet: :muppet:

My computer man ordered a new Hard Drive for me from a well known supplier--
that arrived broken and its taken ages to get a replacement ---not good:eek:

Is it pressure on prices producing badly made goods?

We have also had massive problems with brand new faulty Rodeo Bull equipment---made in UK

I ordered 6 ledj63 spot lights...4 out of the 6 did not work correctly as the red leds was faulty..I sent the 4 back to the shop and they returned 4 back to me..Guess what? When they returned 2 of the 4 did not work with the same problem..I then sent 2 back and when they returned 2 new ones to me they both worked but 2 months down the line 2 have failed again with the same problem..

Alot of problems with electronics items being faulty is the use of the lead free solder! It's more brittle and more likely with a bit of transport crack off and stop things from working. So really it works it's just bad soldering making it fail. More goes into landfill due to it being broken causing more enviormenal problems that a little bit of lead solder! </rant>

I am 25% German so a 1/4 of me functions excellent and very efficient. The other 3/4's are Irish :daft:

I have 3 days of jovial banter then on the fourth day I am very serious, then back to banter.

It actually works kind of like that too strangely.

Have a day off Charlie...

He bought the same make but different models - eg: he sold the 705s to buy the 905 or 902 which are smaller and lighter.

Fair enough. I didn't really understand why somebody would sell a RCF sub then go and buy a new one. All of these '705's' and 902s' don't mean anything to me. Apologies. :beer1:

Exactly what Darren said. I am limited on space so I went for smaller subs which are also a bit lighter (still reasonably heavy though, one at a time lol). 12 inch bass rather than the 15 in the 705 packs less of a punch but still decent enough for my needs and will hopefully last me into do retirement.

I have to agree in general - the amount of DOA goods today is definitely much higher. It's to be expected though, you can't expect high quality and reliability when the price of electronic goods is so low.

I don't think manufacturers are concerned about what is going into landfill so long as the cash keeps rolling in.

I think that in some ways, the paying customers are being used as "Quality Control. I think it's all cost driven, it must be cheaper to send a few more units out to disappointed customers, than pay someone to cvheck them at source.

No VW group consists of VW, Seat, Skoda and Audi. Although techinically at one stage 18 months ago they were all owned by Porsche who had taken options on a lot of their stock (shares). I was following it, but I believe VW were unhappy about what was looking like an agressive take over by stealth and a deal was done - I will have to look up the outcome of that.

It is interesting that Porsche have in recent years made more money from share dealing than selling cars. Shows the state to the world really.

Oh and not forgetting the luxury side of things in Bugatti and Lambo. It could be Lambo that lead you to believe VW had the Italian Fiat brand, who are also Ferrari.

I'll second that about KAM. Quality control seems to be an issue on some products.

Never say never. I know of some Denon kit with one owner which has been an absolute pain. A badge or a price tag is no guarantee of a trouble free life, but it can indeed be a good indicator.

No doubt they get the odd faulty one through, but I would rather go to a gig with a bottle of Tobasco and a roll of Andrex than a Kam CD Player. I should know I have been there - CD player of course. I have never taken Tobasco and Andrex to a gig ever and I don't even know what it means if I am honest. I have worked all weekend from Friday 6:00pm to about 2 hours ago so I am a bit :daft:

Agree. I have imposed a KAM ban. Since trying out a set of the 1960 kam mics which are simply awful. They are pants, bloomers and long john's all rolled into 1!! 3 sets - all faulty. The set with no faults is rubbish.

Trouble is even the better names are slowly letting production move off towards China

Well in defence of KAM--dont know why im doing this im a Cortex Peavey person---maybe a bit if balance--I bought a KAM amp off Martin VV which is now doing sterling service as a temporary PA Amp for the local Church until the Disco shop find me another amp less noisy than the exisitIng amp AND KAM Radio Mikes which are surprisingly decent quality although the on off switches are bad so just fade them up and down when using.

I was a bit miffed when I got my last Peavey Powered Mixer because it was made in China, however its just as good as the one made in America and going strong after two soild years on the road in a variety of locations including dusty barns--so no cant criticise Chinese manufacture on that item.

Do agree however generally you will need to keep any eye on products--bit like Restauraunts and Supermarkets now--no price increases but watch out for less quality and less quantity.

Discos cant do that really:daft:

I'd agree with pretty much everything written so far. As for increasing proportions of DOA equipment I'm not sure - it really does seem to depend on how much you pay for something and most products have cheap options for a reason.

My recent tale was that out of 17 (exceptionally cheap) metal halide floodlights 16 arrived broken so all 17 got returned for a refund. I don't believe this was the couriers as they actually arrived in 3 different shipments, and the company I bought them from have now withdrawn them from sale so I guess other people have had the same issue. The problem was that the internal ballast (big heavy lump of metal) had broken away from the actual housing of the unit so they were just poorly manufactured.

But although annoying I wasn't too bothered as they dealt with it very well and I realised I'd bought cheap. Had I been paying proper money for them then I would have been annoyed. As it is I now need to order replacements from elsewhere. I did think that 16 out of 17 was quite a high failure rate and I also felt sorry for the poor planet.

When I pay for quality kit I do however expect to receive it in one piece and fully working.

Charlie - you can be a bit blonde sometimes. Surely if someone sold you a Ford car you'd have no qualms if they went out and bought a better one?!

Interesting on lighting. We have been having alsorts of issues with the ballast on some shipments of LG7 lighting for offices. Got a number of offices where the odd unit falls over every week. Not good.
