Help needed!

Hi, i have been a mobile dj for 9 years and the pub where i work every week have asked me to do karaoke every friday too :) im still in the dark ages and dj with cd`s rather than laptop and after looking on here and on various sites i have not got a clue what i should be buying!
im looking at getting a sunfly pro 888 as sunfly have an offer of a machine with 2 cordless mics, 9 disc pack of big hits plus any 10 discs of my choice for 200 pound but was wondering if these players are any good for use in pubs or more of a home machine?
Also i wondered if i can just use the KAM kcd mp3200 duel disc player that i use to dj with? iv looked on the KAM site but cant find any info on this player! it has an digital output at the back of each cd tray so i was wondering if i buy some leads can i just connect this to a tv? (told you i was clueless!!) i have looked for info on this player but not seen its capable of playing cd+g discs
any help would be great

Hi im in need of some help, i dj with a kam kcd mp3200 twin cd player and at the back of each disc tray there is an digital output, my problem is i have been asked to do karaoke once a week at the pub where i dj and i wondered if i can just buy leads to go in the digital outputs straight into a tv so the words come up on screen? Im not sure if my player can read cd+g discs ive tried the kam site but cant find any details on my deck! If it cannot read cd+g then can anyone tell me what the digital outputs are for? Hope someone can help i have my first karaoke night booked in 10 days time!!

your players do not play cd&g, the digital output is simply a better quality sound output, S/PDIF digital output is explained in the link below

assuming you have all the other eqpt. and cd&g discs already, you need a cd&g player.

Karaoke is getting ever popular again :)

The Sunfly karaoke player will be fine for what you need (to get you started) and the disc package is a start on the ladder... but make sure you do some research on what is popular to sing at the moment, both new and old stuff - so that when you pick/choose your discs from Sunfly (there are other opertors out there) that you have a good selection...

In time if your karaoke nights pick up and work will, you should consider an outboard mixing desk that has better vocal FX and settings on the gain, top, mid and bottom... using the onboard mic and FX on the Sunfly player is not the best setup and may sound hollow !! but we all have to start somewhere.

Look up some of the following for karaoke CD+G discs, packages, custom burn or starter packs...

Also go on Amazon UK and search for the '100 Hits Karaoke' range, there are loads of karaoke CD+G packs and very very cheap prices and the best things is, they are all licensed Mastermix karaoke tracks :)

If you need to generate/make karaoke books, then i would recommend Karaoke Books at www.karaokebooks.com (subscription required), or if you have the time and know how, make your own in Excel or Word.

Sunfly also offer a free karaoke ticket download :)

I've got a Twinology CD-G decoder sitting collecting dust if you're interested?

It takes the digital output from your CD-Players and decodes the graphics for display on multiple monitors.

Not true - Many CD players with a digital output (with the exception of some Denon units) output CD+G information however you require a decoder.

+1 i agree ive used ek unit linked to a pair of kam decks tried it with some denons and didnt work with digital output stuck it in the flightcase along with the players and mixer and had a pair of those cheap kam wireless mics 19" 1u screwed into the back of the flightcase this provided the guy everything he needed in one box

Not all dual cd players work with the digital decoders !! I know some of the Numark ones or those that use the 'anti shock' tech don't work well or not at all !!

I'd stick with the Sunfly player... which best suits your needs and has all the features of mic control, key change etc.

You'd be best to mate, as there are some mad die hard karaoke singers out there who would look at you as if your nose was a big toe if you couldn't add reverb or change key to their song !

The sunfly player is ok for professional use but the wireless mics almost certainly won't be. When all is said and done every budget player is made in the far east for a price. I remember getting through several players once my trusty JVC packed in.

Have you tried www.emkaraoke.co.uk ? They do a range of players and perhaps if you speak to them, they might do a disc package for you too. Most of their players support mp3+g so you can download and use tracks from Sunfly and the like.

Thanks again everyone i have just ordered the sunfly pro 888 player and bought loads of cd+g discs from amazon as well as sunflys own, now im off to see about books from the advice i have recieved on here.

I hate to be negative... but karaoke isn't something you can just jump straight into without any experience, it could really affect your reputation. Ideally you'd want to work with an experience KJ to gain experience first, or possibly speak to the landlord about a midweek night to get to grips with it first - it will be quieter, with less pressure, and of course less mistakes made :)

Ideally you will need some sort of vocal effects too! Singers can sound very off and flat depending on the venue (and talent!)... I have fx on my Alesis mixer! which I use the echo to varying degrees on the mics!

The pub im doing the karaoke is the ring o bells in weaverham, a really spit n sawdust type pub with a fight most nights! To be honest the folk who use the pub on weekends are usually too smashed to care what they sound like! Yep im lookin forward to my first night lol

When I started I used Pioneer CD players (and sometimes a 300+1 Multi-CD player!) linked up to a VocoPro CD+G decoder and it worked really well. Now it's just 2 JVC CD+G players for ease of use.

As for vocal effects, I find that CD+G player onboard FX are pretty terrible. The best option is a dedicated vocal vocal processor or, failing that, mixer onboard fx are usually superior to those on a player.

Hi folks thanks for all your advice i have now done 2 karaoke nights in the same pub and despite the first one being fairly quiet last night was packed and plenty of singers, which was lucky as when i arrived to set up there was a new landlord who had no idea i was coming and didnt seem too happy! he told me unless it was busy he would cancel the Karaoke night as he hates Karaoke!!
Thankfully due to the success of last night im carrying on but to be honest i find this man a real pain and if it wasnt for the fact i DJ in this pub every sat i would of told him to stick it!!
I opted for the Sunfly Pro 888 Player and put all the discs on an SD card which is a dream to work with, i dont however use the Sunfly players effects as i found them poor so its all connected to the mixer i DJ with, i also found the 2 Sunfly radio mics to be very poor and instead im using 2 corded mics i was given by a friend in the recording business and these sound great.
