Just how stupid are you?

Something I often get asked from my Wife :eek:

From time to time I do stupid stuff which costs me money. Unfortunately this is happening with increasing regularity but, in my opinion, over my lifetime, I'm still doing not too badly.

Examples: -

When I was about 20, I put £100 in cash in my back pocket which I knew had a big hole in it. Lost said £100.

A few years ago, I withdrew £200 from a cash machine then walked away without taking it. The machine automatically draws it back in after a set time and if the machine then tallies £200 up the bank will credit you. Unfortunately someone passing by acted quickly and swiped my £200 before it went back in, so I lost it.

A few months ago, I booked some Ryanair flights (£200 each return) for me, my wife and son. I forgot my wife is still to change her passport to her married name and the tickets were all in my surname, this was only noticed at the gate and she was refused boarding. £400 lost (I went, wife and son stayed home :D)

Last week (Wednesday night), I came home from the cinema and couldn't find a permit parking space in my street. Turnover is really high, if you drive around a while you usually get one but that failed so I parked on some double yellows with the intention of coming out and moving it in 10 minutes, or at the very latest before I went to bed. Went out on Saturday to go somewhere and only then remembered where I'd left it 3 days before. It had been ticketed then impounded - another £200 lost.

These are really the only stupid things (with monetary consequences) I have ever done, and they still only total £900 in my lifetime. I reckon that's not bad. My wife disagrees.

Anyway, am I average? Can you total up what you've lost for no good reason and is it better or worse than my total?

Several years ago I turned up for an internal flight without my passport, (I didn't think it was needed for UK travel) and was refused travel, costing me the £100 or so I had paid plus the hotel booking. It didn't stop there however, I also lost out on the deal I was traveling to finalise, the cost of that, could well have been many thousands of £s in lost profits, I'll never know.

In my defence I feel I should point out that it was for a family gathering and I was going out to meet 15 of my family to celebrate a 60th birthday...it's not as if I went on a holiday on my own!

Stupidest money-related thing I ever did was believe a punter (a groom) who claimed to have left his wallet at home, and agreed to pick up the following morning.

Except the following morning he completely denied all knowledge of knowing me, anything about a wedding, party or disco and shut the door in my face :o

In my defence, it was the mid-80s, I was about 16 and the sum in question was £50.

Long story short a pub where I did karaoke at had a small carpark at the rear on a very steep slope. There wasn't much space but thought I could just about get my van in.... I couldn't.....

Result was I knocked into those really large wheely bins which just happened to be on the top of the slope, result was these started moving and smashed into three cars one after another which I watched unable to do anything and pretty wide mouthed.

Repair bill was just over £900......

One of the most stupidest things I have done that isn't money related was 2 years ago when we had that really bad snow storm in the south. I was booked to do a Karaoke for Gala Bingo. I went and drove to the venue at midday just as the snow started coming down really heavily...quite scary actually.

I should have guessed that it would be a no-goer but still went ahead and struggled with the worst access to a venue that I have ever had, made worse by stupidly heavy snow and steep steps (about 50 of them). I eventually got all of the gear in safely and set up. When I returned to the van some 90 minutes later it looked really bad outside. This was about 1.30pm.

It took me nearly 6 hours to get home (normally 10 minutes). I called the customer whilst stuck in the traffic jam at around 4.30pm and I was around half way home. She said that they'd had to cancel the gig (re-scheduled for later in the new year) and all the staff had been sent home. I was gutted....

But that's not the worst bit.....

I arranged for the venue to open up the next day (even though they were closed) so that I could get my gear out. I parked the van on a slight slope, double checking that all was ok and then proceeded to get into the venue via the steep stairs to get my gear. As I made it to the top step I heard a screech and saw my van sliding down the slope. The screech was where the drivers side hit some railings. It scraped the side of the van but stopped literally inches away from what looked like a brand new Mercedes that was parked behind it.

Another stupid thing (and not really my fault ha! ha!) was when I was about 10 years old, I had a paper round. I used to love reading the comics on my way round the houses before and after school. My favourite (not sure if anyone will remember it) was a comic called 'Crazy Comic' and on the back cover of every issue was a disguise. On this particular day (in the summer), the disguise on the back cover was a drain cover.

I thought I was going absolutely mental....One second I was reading the comic whilst walking along and the next, I had dropped it but couldn't see where it was! It was a baking hot day and I must have been there for about 10 minutes trying to find the bloody comic. It was only when a car drove past and one of the pages flicked over that I found it. The disguise on the back cover was obviously very good and I felt....S.T.U.P.I.D. (cue The Sultans Of Ping!).

Not that stupid I suppose, but I won a Pioneer mixer in 2005 on eBay with a bid of £410 and sent a cheque, which was cashed, and that was the last I knew of that...

Ebay was relatively new at that time, and they didn't want to know, nor did my bank. Still annoyed about it to this day!

In the early ebay days a man from Israel sent me a company cheque for an ebay item - he added a bit more to the total and asked me to send a second item - should have smelt a rat - waited a few days and the money appeared on my statement, but as it was an international cheque it took longer to bounce, which it duly did.
