What Scanners???

So this weekend I borrowed four abstract VRX scanner lights, two scanners and two barrels and used them in conjunction with a haze machine and DMX controller

Wasn't very impressed with the barrels, but kind of liked the scanners (with the flat mirrors), which left me thinking that I need to update and improve my light show, which currently consists of two Stormbirds, and a MiracLED with a couple of LED Pars.

Realistically don't want to spend too much, (Martin Wizards are of my league!), don't mind LED - but I do not want bright dots(!). and needs to be DMX able. I'm thinking four along the overhead bar with a centre peice???? :confused:

What are people using and what the recommendations?

Acme Dynamos ! you could always add the barrel versions - the Dynarolls.

mmm not sure of the Dynamos - are they bright enough? or are the "shapes" big enough????

Id recommend the Martin MX-1s if your looking for a halogen scanner.

I use 4 of them with the Martin MC Showtime and they are good lights and very reliable. You cant buy them new anymore though. Nice effect though.

You can pick them up on ebay for a good price.

The dynamos have a fairly narrow beam.

The modern day equivalent is the American DJ Comscan, basically an LED version of the Dynamos.

Most of these style units I think you need 4 units and smoke for them to be effective, which is why barrels fit the bill better IMO where smoke is not allowed.

I don't know what your budget is but you might want to look at slightly better scanners or even moving heads that have wider beam angles and 3/5 facet prisms so they cast a much wider image.

Ok, so if I widened my budget a little???

I would rather pay more for something that I am happy and that would last for a number of years, than pay less for something that I am not entirely happy with :confused: :D

I was using the Acme Dynamo party scans 100 Watt x 4 within my setup, very impressed with them :), however i am no moving over to LED and hopefully moving head stuff along with some uplighting, so will have no use for them any more (will be selling them as a set of 4).

I did consider the Acme Dynaroll and Dynatwins

Those Stairville SCX50 look really nice actually. Pity they are out of stock at Thomann.

Paulie, I was thinking of the VIZI SPOT from American DJ. You can get 2 for about £1000 and there are good gobo, prism options.

.... those scans though ... tempted!

The prolight stuff is good all depends what you want to spend and what power you want

Get two or four martin Scx 500 or Scx 600 there amazing and you don't need to use Dmx or any controller. once you set them up there really good, they have there own shows sound to light, worth the money!

But looking at the Martin website, I see that they are only 150 W bulb and not the usual 250w.. This poses the question - are they bright enough???

I too am looking for some additional lights, will probably have to wait until after xmas though but I like to plan ahead - my budget is in the region of £500 and am ideally after 4 'effect' lights. With that budget in mind I can't afford LED moving heads and also I already have an ImpossibLED so don't really want anything with 'dots'.

I've seen the 250W Acme Scanners & Barrels and may go down this route (2 of each) as I think this would compliment my show nicely with my LED Par cans and ImpossibLED and they come in a tad under £500.

I do want new lights, not second hand. Apart from what's been mentioned in this thread, can anyone recommend anything else or do you think the Acme's would suffice?

I bought 4 Acme Dynamo 250's in mint condition and in boxes for £200 off e-bay a few months ago. Used with the CA-8 controller, they are an effective and value for money option.
