To all,

Its been about three months since i discovered the MDD, and in that time I have realised my own potential and the fact that my disco company is not a hobby as the beer money DJ's perhaps percieve it, but a business that can thrive with enough hard work and effort on my part.

I am eternally grateful to all my new found friends, especially Shaun as he has passed me so much work and you have all given me wonderful support and advice.

I would certainly urge anyone who is perhaps thinking about getting into the business or someone new to the forum to stick around and ask loads of questions as i have gained a lot of good advice and support through doing this myself.

I may have big aspirations and i see nothing wrong with that, but i do realise that it may take time and at times it may seem that other companies are getting more business than me, but i shouldn't worry as i am NOT competing with them, i am working alongside them in a very specialised business, also if they do offer thier services for less money again it shouldn't worry me as I may not be able to compete on price, but i do compete on quality, at the end of the day clients will pay that little bit extra if they get excellent service and good value.

I come from a Customer Service Background and hope to use the skills i have gained as well as the advice gained from the forum to further expand my business.

At the end of the day networking with other companies and going the extra mile for the customer will help push my business to how i want it to go.

You have the right outlook on this business Garry. I've chatted with you privately on many occasions and it's obvious you have a passion and drive for this industry, I've no doubt that you'll do very well and continue to grow and be successful.

For me, the MDD community has proved to be a great source of information, networking and comradarie. It's nice to have a place to chill, talk shop and have a laugh with great people that have the same love of the job that I have. Cheers y'all :beer:

this is exactly true garry well done and i totally agree its great when people in the same profession can give advice to others and constructive critisizm where needed

ive said before thanks to the advice of some very professional individuals who i hold in very high regard my business has gone from pictures taken for sale on ebay to wanting to raise the bar every week in 18 months.

sorry to clarify i had taken pics of my gear set up etc to sell on ebay 18 months ago and was ready to jack it all in had had enough before talking to some really good people on another site who im glad to say are also here most of them.

dont give up im finding things slow at mo as ive just put my prices up just take a breather if you need to its all about marketing a fine gentleman spent 2 hours of his phone bill with me going through my site page by page and my technique to customers and its all been worth it also ive spoken to many on the subjusct of charges no im not going to hijack the thread just to say that sadly to me the amount you charge seems to be directly proportional the the kind of client you attract.

this of course means you need to be sure that you are different from the norm and be totally customer driven.

to be honest it was the very first thing a fellow pro warned me about when i relocated 2 years ago was told that derby for some reason has lots of beer money djs ..... but having listened to my clients talk people learn from experience i did a wedding who on my meeting with the family told me i was the 9th disco they had used !!! no pressure! but 2 of their friends have since booked weddings with me so thats nice ...... im totally rubbish at telling people im brilliant just a regular guy who wants to do the best he can for people but that doesnt sound very spectacular lol.

had an enquiry the other day a woman asked ...... will you get all my friends dancing???

im an honest guy and said i do my best i dont just play track after track or my favourite songs i try to get people in the party mood and use my personality to energise a dancefloor ....... but some people are just miserable..... (a brides mothers words not mine) what i cant do is man handle your friends onto the dancefloor 9 out of 10 functions maybe more i have people boogieing from start to finish..

shes not called back yet lol.

you cant do anything more then being honest with customers, I think they respect and appreciate it.

beer money dj's are a problem, hopefuly customers shud be aware there are proper ones out there, And book them

Reckon you got that spot on--if you say yes of course and they dont--theres always a danger that they might try and not pay fully--not because you are a bad DJ---because their friends/relatives just dont dance!!!!

Usually the people who say that KNOW they wont dance :sad:

Im a bit luckier--people know if they dont get up and Dance they get shouted at ---by me :teeth:

Dont give up mate, and please do not get depressed about it - the bookings will come, just be strong and dont feel pressured into dropping your prices, stick to them and things may go slow, but further down the line you will be happy at sticking to your guns
