View Full Version : Placing Active Speakers on Subs

Looking to get 2 subs as per a previous post i currently have 2 X 15inch active speakers which weigh 28 kg each, as to placing on speaker poles in the top hat of the sub yes or no ? I'm concerned the top hat will break and speaker pole impale the sub.

I wouldn't worry too much. I have passive 15" cabs that are 32kgs each and use some stainless poles my brother made me in the top of subs. Never had any probs at all. My 15" subs are 35kgs and the 18" are 46kgs so the tops are on a decent base.

um thats a point better check weight of subs hmm subs are lighter than the speakers

The sub manufacturer should be able to give you details on the maximum weight which can be put on the top hat of the sub. If it's a moulded type (e.g. Peavey/JBL) there shouldn't be too much of an issue.

I had some Omnitronic subs which had non-moulded (they simply looked spot welded tbh) top hat adaptors and one eventually failed - Luckily it failed as I was putting the speaker onto the pole so no damage was caused to the driver in the sub.

If it helps. Ive got a couple of strong original Peavey top hats knocking about somewhere. I havent got any use for them anymore if they are of any use to you.

Usual old story, buy matching speakers of same brand --e.g. tops and subs from say Peavey in my case ---should be no problems.

In addition I favour this approach for crossovers--im sure Peter will disagree;)

Might do, in a manner of speaking. My prefered option would be to rip the internal crossovers out of the subs, and use an active one, and a second amp. ( Mind you, one of the amps is a P****y. ;) :D :D :D
