We all have these at some point and one happened to me last week.

In most of the venues we work in during December we wear a dinner suit. The first party I did last week was mostly youngsters who were a lot more casual and to be honest, though I still think it looks great, I get a bit fed up wearing it.

So, last week I was speaking to the deputy manager at one of the Hotels and was discussing whether it is essential and in the end, as things are generally a lot less formal these days, we agreed on suit and tie as a minimum.

So, next day, I turn up to the same venue with suit and tie and guess what? Yep, everyone else was in black tie....

Just out of interest, do you wear a suit to all the gigs you do?
I did it for a while but then thought it was overkill so it's just trousers, shirt and shoes now. I have worn a dinner suit once as I did a very posh retirement function last year and I asked the lady if she wanted me to look the part too. She said I could wear what I wanted but I thought it would look good so I did it.

I had the same kind of thing as you though at a party I did earlier this year. I was doing a party that was for a load of Ex-Mods, Skinheads etc...I thought it would be a good excuse for me to wear my Ben Sherman suit, Skinny tie etc even though it was a pretty warm day. I thought I would fit in and felt really good in it until one of the guests said "Aint you warm in all that mate?".

I give clients the choice and I have noticed that everything is becoming a lot more casual. For weddings, I tend to wear suit and shirt as a minimum. These are for Xmas gigs though and most of the venues expect us to wear dinner suit just because we always have!

A cut above the rest perhaps? Or maybe OTT?

I did have a bow tie with me actually, but I had a normal black suit and not a dinner suit. You can't mix and match! :p

I have always said that the way we present ourselves,is a big factor.

I also normally wear a suit and tie to my hotels christmas parties.Yes its a bit frustrating when you see most guests are now casual dressed.

I don't think there's anything wrong with it. Each to their own etc...
I do mention in my meetings that I will be dressed smartly and I actually ask (like I will in tonight's meeting) if the customer requires me to wear a suit etc.

99.99% of the time the answer will be "You can wear what you like" but if someone did request me to wear a suit or dinner suit etc, I wouldn't have a problem with it at all.

It's up to the client... but even most weddings are now stating for me to be 'open collar'. I always where nice cufflinks though :D

I'm generally open collar shirt and trousers for Xmas join-a-party gigs.

A recent bug bear of mine is asking a specific hotel on more than one occasion if there is a dress code for a function they've booked me for, being told no, then turning up to find everyone in black tie.

I normally wear black trousers and a black long sleeved shirt.

I've got a cream tuxedo jacket and a cream spotted bow tie to go with these if it's a more formal do.

That seems to cover most eventualities.

I normally wear black tie, but Friday night as it was a staff Christmas party at the local Comp, I wore black shirt and trousers, when I get there they tell me its a Hollywood Awards Style evening, and they're all in Dinner Suits and Cocktail dresses!! FFS, why didn't they give me a clue, paperwork asks all the questions, but no clues given apart from Christmas Party. Luckily had a bow-tie in my toolbox!!
