Just got this from my brother in law who is a mad scientist- can anyone think of an example?

"I am trying to think of an analogy to help people understand my protein structures for this manuscript I'm writing. The activation mechanism involves two identical proteins binding to each other to form a dimer.

Each protein has a rod that sticks out from its surface to plugs into a pocket (socket) on the other protein in a symmetrical way. So each protein has a rod and a pocket and they bind by 180o rotational symmetry.

Do you know if there are electrical connectors or wood work joints or some other household item that has this sort of connection (two things connect where each part has one male and one female connection)."

If I've understood that correctly, the bond is formed by a join (consisting of symmetrical male-female pairings), and then a 180 degree twist. So on that basis, a twin-terminal battery doesn't fit the bill.

I can't really think of any common connection type that does that :confused:

Rotational (axial) symmetry is not the same as a twist, it's reversed-mirror image :confused:

Admittedly I would not recommend joining the batteries together, for safety reasons, but the connectors for them would be fine.
