Well be honest, surely it's obligatory to care about every aspect of your rig and business? Lights are just one part of it, and shouldn't we be coinstantly striving to achieve a rig that we're happy with? I know I'm just about there since buying the Teutonic Powerbar, I can add whatever takes my fancy to the basic package, or even use it solo.

Only problem is, the manufacturers keep moving the goalposts, by bringing out nice new shiny toys for us. I can remember the initial excitement about the Impossibled, and it's now just old hat.

Mind you, there are still days when I yearn for the simplicity of Lightscreens and spotboxes. :D :D :D

True. However: I've said before that as long as a few lights flash a bit, most punters are happy. I've actually had punters express admiration when I switched on the old KAM panels, and they started sequencing.

I'm simply warning against the two extremes of excessive complacency ( my lights flash) and excessive opulence ( I've got the latest 17megawatt Flashy Blighters from Progit).

For most mobiles, the middle ground is just fine. ( Though I tired of dots a long time ago, and went back to filament units for various reasons. When we get 100w LED units with gobos at £50 a pop, the job will be a good 'un )

A few years ago when the led units started to come out i had a few,the impossibled,the marveled,the boogie,the tango.these were all "dot style" led effects,after a while i became bored of them,so they had to go.

Yes it was me who decided i did not like them anymore,not the paying customer.so it is true that its us djs who are trying to impress other djs with our lightshow,not the paying customer.

I now have martin mania efx 600s,efx 500s,isolution irock7,isolution ishow4

You never see martin bringing out a led dot effect!

Yeah and the public doesn't care about the sound system, what it looks like, what the DJ looks like, whether the speakers have covers on, whether the DJ uses the mic, and oh and the gear isn't going to be seen as it's in the dark...

im my experiance, the things youve mentioned are exactly what the public notice. a poor sound system, scruffy dj and lack of interaction using the mic are all things clients have mentioned to me about other dj's they have seen.

not once has anyone asked 'do you have moving heads or martin lighting?'

i'll admit im a little bored seeing the same lights ive been using for 18 months, but im there to entertain the crowd, not look at the lights.

my clients seen happy, so i see no point in spending huge amounts of money on expensive lights that no one will pay attention to anyway ;)

Sadly cost is an ever increasing factor --e.g. e Bay Weddings---aaaaarghhh!!!

I think good lighting is as important as everything else. A good light show really adds to the atmosphere. Dots really don't cut the mustard IMO

Agreed, i think from the customers perspective , when on the dance floor, the last thing they will be doing is an in depth analysis of your light show, and, there would be no way of them knowing whether its "dots" or a gobo pointing at them.
I have 2 Miracleds and despite being a little boring from MY pov, they fill the floor and I have never received a negative comment from a client/customer.

To be honest, what I've been finding recently is folk, other than the DJs, couldn't give a diddly-squat about the lights. On our works night out last week we were in a Lloyds No 1 Bar in Newcastle and I made a remark to my collegues about the number of Martin Wizzard Extreme's they had. My collegues proceeded to refer to me as "sad"! :(

Again, at work a couple of days ago, I remarked that I'd just spent nearly £1,400 on a new pair of RCF speakers 'cos dad had seen a club "turn" with them and said he thought they sounded brilliant. My boss said "How much??? :eek: As long as people can hear clearly, and they've had a bit to drink, I don't think they'd care less what your speakers are like or how much they cost! They'd still dance and enjoy themselves. Madness!!". Funny thing is, from the "lower-mid" range kit that I've used for years I'd have to agree with her.

But I do think DJ appearance is very important. Which reminds me, I need a shave for this afternoon's show!!

I went to a friends wedding in London recently and this was the finished setup.

When, after the event I mentioned that it was "a bit basic" no-one agreed, they all said they were, (and this included the bride and groom) "very impressed"

Make you wonder why do we bother doesn't it

I did a gig with a band the other night, while we were setting up I spent 30 minutes tidying the rig, taping down cables and generally making it look very neat. The band well, they didnt seem to care about cables everywhere their equipment was at least 20 years old, Basically they looked a mess. but when they started playing nobody cared they were fantastic and had the crowd eating out of their palm. I sat their wondering to myself.

I wonder if bands have the same conversations we do :-)

I only use a few lights because it's expected. In 2003 i used 6 metre truss with fitting starcloth, 4 mini macs, 4 acrobats and 2 mirror balls and 8 par 56's. In 2011 i use 2 quadzillas! Nobody has noticed!!

I think the hardest critic of any lighting show are those who have one themselves i.e us. I almost out of habit replace most of my effects either annually or as one effect wears out i replace as a pair with the newest one that catches my eye.

But there is not normally anything wrong with the old effects I just get bored of them myself.

i can't make out the speakers but i assume they sounded ok as you didn't mention the quality or lack of it, looking at the picture i see a compact rig that could be a little neater have the mixer hidden, but the main thing is everyone was impressed so he has delivered everything the bride and groom were expecting so theres a chance he may get some referrals so in my view the jobs a good un.

I would agree that most clients do not care about lighting but they will notice a good light show. For example the wizard extreme "pink rose" gobo gets many great comments and you wouldn't get that from a LED dot.
