Electrovoice ELX 115 passive top speakers - WOW!

Hello,

Yesterday (Saturday) I went to pick up a pair of Electrovoice ELX 115 passive top speakers and a amplifier to run these speakers.

Once I got to the shop in Luton, the guy had a pair set up on demo for me to listen to and well, what can I say? They were bloody mind blowing! I can't believe how clean and crisp they sound along with very good bass response!

I also can't believe how lightweight they are! They rate them at 23KG each cab, but when you pick them up, it doesn't feel no where near that at all.

I used them for the first time tonight at a Christmas party at Chartridge Park Golf Club, and I was completely blown away by them! I had a few guests come up to me and say how good it sounded compaired to other parties they have been too.

I am really IMPRESSED with them and will reccomend them to DJ's looking for a pair of passive speakers.

I will get a pair eventually, but I want to try the tops on their own first in a range of venues to see how they cope.

I can understand that, they will cope with mist small/medium venues. I very rarely use my bass bins as my ZX4 tops cope with most on their own. It does sound better with the bins tho

Yes, the Mackie SRM 450's I have as well cope well for small to medium venues without a sub woofer, but I would like to see if I can get that from the EV's as well.

The most people I've catered for at anyone time is about 175 but this is a rare occasion to get 175 people at most events for me. It normally averages about 100 - 125.

I have been reading reviews about the active versions and I've read that they are overheating and just generally not as good as the passive versions.

If I get another pair of passive ones, I will get the twelve inch version because I feel that the 15 inch version is a tad on the large side.

THe problem is the active has a 1000watt amp on the back of it, but its essentially a 350 cab as it is the same guts as the Passive. So people are going wow a 1000watt cab and caning it and killing it. Lack of knowledge and just reading the amp rating. Its just the same class D that is strapped to the back of the bass bin, so if you cane it it will overheat. They are a pro cab so EV expect some reasonable knowledge from operators.

You need them the bass response is not good on them in my opinion and I love them. They wil cope very well as they are effectively a long throw cab. I trialed mine in a 45 metre room and they were almost as loud at teh back as on the dance floor. Even sound distribution is their key asset.

I won't recommend them to a DJ looking for just full range cabs and I own a pair. You need at least one bass cab. unlike Mackies et al their is no cross over in the bass so you will need a speaker management system like the DBX drive rack or as a minimum a cross over.

Watch overdriving them as they don't throw at lot out of the back of the cab, so if you are behnd them they can sound flat and quiet, but round the front they are really giving it some. My desk was giving me that feedback over the last two nights too. Couldn't understand why I was running high on the desk, but out front I could. Still learning with them, but still happy.
