Securing Lights to Stands

Just wondering something..

How many of you use steel safety cable with your G-Clamps to nothing is taken for granted!?
I was going to buy a Giraffe 4ft goalpost stand at the weekend, but I wondered whether the double crossbar at the top is a sensible option? How many lights do you guys reckon would be sensible for a this type of stand? I was thinking 5-6 max, I can't tell if this would be overcrowded or not?

So long as you follow the guidelines - all stands and fixtures have a maximum weight value - and secure everything, you should be OK (providing no outside forces come into play)

hi there i have the 6ft version of the stand your on about and i have 10 lights on it and still have room so yes i would say you could easily get 6 lights on the 4ft one. and as cables go i too use the steel cables with the G clamp bolt. they are very tough and iv always found them the best. hope this helps m8

Well I usually scout around on the net and go to my local dealer and see how close they can price match it! I have found ebdj.co.uk do pretty much the best range of stands I ever seen so I'd recommend going there if you are looking. Excellent service as well if you want to purchase of the net :)

I will only use safety steels when lighting is suspended above an audience, not if used on stage.

Why is the double bar SO MUCH more expensive than the single?
The 4ft single is £85 the 4ft double is £150.
£65 for an extra bar!!

The double bar would be good as you can put lights on both bars (be they above it or hanging below). Also imagine that cables would be more 'hidden' than on a single bar.
I have a feeling my decision will come down to price. :(

I have a feeling that might be the case with me as well. I'm sure somebody will know why the price difference i so high, as I don't! The other problem I have is that I'm not a big fan of flightcasing my stuff as the whole thing is so heavy to carry around, plus the screws usually make marks on the kit unless you use washers etc. So I think I'm going to have to custom make a plywood shelf or something. I would have loved one of the Ultimax 4 footers, but they're £129.99 on their own, plus all the little extras on top and about 30 quid for a carpeted shelf. :(

No, there is no law saying you must use safetys when lighting is used over stage areas.

The double bar on my Ultimax stand is 4 times as strong as the single bar, so it might be worth going double.

I've got the Ultimax Winch stand and I got it from Direct Distribution (http://www.directdistribution.uk.com/) which is Ultimax's retail arm.

It takes no more than 5-10 minutes to set up really.

Much, much better and every single peice of it can be bought as a seperate item.. so if you loose anything you don't have to replace the whole thing.

If not law, it is a health and safety "thing" that you must comply to.

not a deck stand type thing more of a normal lighting stand but i picked up a 3m trilight truss stand last week that can hold up to 120kg for £80.00 inc delivery..

If it's a health and safety thing, then it must be law surely?There are a lot of 'Guidelines' given by HSE which aren't law - but if you aren't following their 'guidelines' and something goes wrong then it would be frowned upon...... prime example: PAT testing

I am not saying that it is in their guidelines that you should have safety wires / chains - I really don't know about that. We use them anyway on all hung lighting. They are only cheap and we'd rather be safe than sorry.
