Do any of you get the flu jabs?
I have never really looked into getting them but I am now fed up with getting flu around this time every year.
I started to feel like rubbish on Friday but managed to get through my parties on Friday and Saturday but it was hard work. My immune system is pretty bad anyway for various reasons which I won't bore you with but when I get the flu bug, it hits me hard.
Yesterday was a struggle too as I had lots to do going round collecting gear etc from venues and today it's hit me big time.

Timing was good though as at least I have a few days off now until Christmas Eve when I'll be out again.

Anyone suffer the same thing every year?
Do you have flu jabs and do they work?

Had 'flu for two years Xmas's in a row and my doctor recommend 'flu jabs - but after a few years of a bit of hassle (too young, too well to qualify for one- and had to beg) I stopped.

I have had the flu jab every year since I suffered a dose of 'real flu' (as opposed to man flu), I genuinley thought I was dying, it was that bad, and I don't want to feel like that again! To answer your question, yes they do work, I've not had flu again since, but, they don't give you protection from a bad cold (aka man flu) :)

I have had the flu jab for the last 8-10 years. And without wanting to tempt fate, I have never had the flu in all that time. For me it does it's job. I can't believe that everyone doesn't get the jab, especially the guys who work themselves.

I don't mean to sound skeptical but if you had flu you wouldn't be going round collecting gear, sounds more like a nasty cold. Flu is a lot nastier than some people realise, it killed my auntie.

Well there are various forms of flu for a start and it will affect people in different ways.

Look Dr Cowlinn, I've been around long enough to know the difference between a nasty cold and flu. If I had a nasty cold I wouldn't have even mentioned it.

I had no choice with regards to running around like a mad man collecting equipment etc because there was no'one else around to help me. It had to be done....simple as that.

Your own words Gary :eek: , did you at any time consider the risk of spreading the virus to others ? :(

Statistically amongst the most likely places to catch viruses, are hospitals and doctors waiting rooms, due to the fact that transmissible people are concentrated there.

In answer to the OP, I have had the flu jab every year for the past five. This is work-related as I am regularly in contact with vulnerable individuals.
Apart from a stiff arm for several days afterward, there have been no noticeable symptoms. :)

Every time I have a flu jab--I get the flu--only a mild version;)

However this year I didnt get it --but my wife and son did--so I got it again :eek:

I think its important to know Gary that the injection protects against known strains and probably quite nasty ones that are killers---however theres loads more out there developing all the time so theres no guarantee the jab will stop flu/colds etc however---got to be worth a go.

Same as anti biotics--its like throwing darts at a board.:daft:

We all work in high risk situations i.e. working closely with people in locations where people can pass problems on to you.

A jab is simply risk reduction--never a complete answer;)

Unless you have asthma or respiratory problems ( ie high risk) like me I think its about £25 a pop down at the Doctors.

What don't you understand? I had to collect my equipment, ill or not. No'one else could do it for me and I wouldn't expect anyone else to do it either.

Seriously.....this place sometimes. I asked a simple question about flu jabs and I get someone who says he no longer DJ's yet doesn't contribute anything to the forum other than try to stir things up more or less imply I am lying (join the queue) and someone else who appears to be making out that I am some kind of Mr Nasty and not taking anyone else into account.

Of course I'm not suggesting that you would deliberately infect anyone :( , just enquiring whether you were aware that by visiting a number of locations, or indeed just by being in public, you might do so inadvertantly ? ;)
Even Doctors recommend that if you have flu-like symptoms you do not visit their surgeries. Keep warm and still, plenty of fluids and paracetemol/aspirin is the best solution they advise :)

Stiff arm, yes. I felt off colour for a day or two after, but regard the benefits as outweighing the disadvantages.

I can understand this comment. I've had full-on flu twice in my life - both at this time of year. The worst was last year. I had flu combined with sinusitis which was causing me severe headaches - worse than anything I've ever experienced as a migraine sufferer. I spent several days in bed from boxing day and I was literally crying with the pain (not like me at all). I even considered if jumping through the bedroom window would end the pain if I could have gotten the energy to stand up (again, very much not like me!! :eek: ). I actually had to cancel my NYE dream gig (supporting a comedy-club night headlined by a well-known local comedian who appears on tv!!) which is about the worst thing I've had to do. I'm just lucky I could get another DJ to cover it for me.

I don't get a flu jab but, if I get hit hard like last year again, it's something that I'd have to consider.

I have come down with flu every year normally around week 2 or 3 of december. As already said probably because we mix with so many people at events. Unfortuantly my immune system was badly compromised 4 years ago when i came down with glandular fever and shingles on my head at the same time. Ever since then i always come down with flu or toncilitus when stressed. I tried jabs one year but with no apparent effect.

At the very least you might have people to cover your Christmas gigs while you recover properly from what is a potentially fatal condition ?

It regularly claims the lives of between a quarter and half a million people annually, of which around 15% are in so-called highly developed areas such as the U.S and Britain. This increases significantly in pandemic years.
