Im thinking about buying one of these lasers, My question is, How does the shape appear halfway down the laser?, Surely the shape wouldnt appear until the beams hit a solid object.

Yes its a good trick - if you're in a venue that can do it - its basically a wafer thin piece of sheer netting material - it catches some of the laser light, but still allows some of the light to keep going (the light that misses the material threads). It's used frequently up high at the back of the set on TV show "Never mind the buzzcocks" with Moving head gobos rather than lasers.

Domestic example - shine a torch through nylon/net curtain, you get a big light circle on the curtains, but some of the light makes it though the window.

The name of the material is called gauze. :) More than likely Sharks tooth gauze when lit from the front it appears lit from behind it disappears.
