Stag weekend in Bristol

Well I'm getting married in February and on January 13th me and 14 of my mates are off for a 3 night stag weekend in Bristol. We've booked 3 apartments near the city centre and I wondered if any of the Bristol lads or lasses can recommend any good pubs and nightclubs we can visit. A suggestion for a decent left field nightclub with good DJ's would be great !

We were looking at going to Timbuk2 on the Saturday for a Crazylegs & Headrush night, seems to be a few DJ's on there, anyone been, know of it or maybe knows any of the DJ's playing and if they're any good??

Honest truth, I'd never even come across TimBuk2... Worth looking at though I'd think? I've never heard of any of the names on the list.

If you're looking for good DJ's, avoid pretty much all of the main stream venues on corn street or on the waterfront as they'll be your typical party music scene (90's/chart played juke box style). It might be worth checking out some of the student oriented venues up on the Clifton Triangle (The Bunker, Po nah nah, etc) as they do have good DJ's and some of the more interesting music policies, but it does depend on your age and some of these nights are student only (I feel preeety old these days when I've played in either venue).

Anyways Mark quite a few have got back to me, mostly through twitter so have copied and pasted stuff in, might of been better to ask places to avoid actually!

Did you tell them that he wanted good DJ's??? Oceana has shocking DJ's. I know the guy who does the Fri nights in the 80's room on the top floor and he's very good, but the Sat night guy in there is rubbish and the main room seems to have a selection of poor talent in it. The whole chain went under back in Oct because the door fee and the drinks are overpriced and the whole experience is dated and lackluster and has a bit of a meat market feel to it... The last time I went in on a Sat night they were doing Karaoke using Singstar on a PS3 in the bar downstairs...

Corn street is good for pubs, but expect to hear the usual party dross in the background. The usual game is to go into the Commercial rooms (Wetherspoons) at the top of Corn street and get in the cheap beer and then move on somewhere else for entertainment. The Walkabout across the street is my wife's usual deal - though you take your chances with the DJ in the retro room on the top floor (I've been in a few times and seen some very good and very bad DJ's) and their regular DJ downstairs is a 2 legged jukebox for chart. However, Walkabout is full of drunk women - I've yet to go there and not be bought a drink or chatted up in the queue outside - the wife has banned me from going back :D

There's a few other glorified pub/clubs on Corn street, but they're all average music wise and will be playing the same rubbish as each other. There are also a few "gentlemens clubs" in this area (Urban Tiger, Pussycat lounge and Lounge @No.30) offering all manner of "entertainment".

If you go slightly off corn street into the side streets there's a few venues offering live/alternative music (Start the Bus has a big room upstairs which usually has something going on). If you go over to Baldwin street you also have Eton (nightclub) and O'Neils which has reflex in the basement (70's/80's if that's your thing).

Habourside isn't bad for pubs... You've got Lloyds, Pitcher & Piano and a couple of others - again, nothing to write home about music or DJ wise. Oceania is behind this line and you've got Za Za Bazaar (1000 seater buffet style restaurant), Tikka Flame and a bunch of other chain restaurants in the area so it can make for an easy night out with food/pub/club in the same area as long as you're happy with average, chain style dining/drink/entertainment throughout.


Hooters has also been mentioned.....

Hooters is in the same area as Oceana (millenium square behind the waterfront) and it's ok for a laugh especially if you tell them you're part of a stag party when you go in (they'll have you hula hooping, standing on the tables messing about and doing the Macarena with the girls). Don't expect too much from the food, if it wasn't made in a deep fat fryer, they don't serve it. Also don't expect them to get your order right (or your bill) :D

Dojo is building a good reputation on the underground music scene, but it's tiny. There's a whole bunch of small basement clubs like these around Park Row, Park St and the Clifton triangle - there's also good pickings on the bar front if you crawl up Park St from the centre.
