Headset Radio Mike

Anyone got practical working experience with these?

I tried out the JTS headset version of the hand held I normally use.

Found it to have more bass, a lack of top end and higher gain than the hand held as well as sounding a bit boomy and feeding back.

I appreciate positioning the mike in the right place for best results is not easy.

Or is this what you have to accept when using headset kits?

I used identical eq and volume controls on the mixer for the comparison between the two mikes.

I thought it was the big Church Hall I was playing in that caused this---BUT when I used the hand held realised it wasnt--handheld sounded a lot better to me.

Im extremely happy with the handheld JTS---but maybe I should try Shure for the headset ?

I had a UHF SM58 headset and found I couldn't get enough gain on it - it was for karaoke, so I could free up my hands a bit.

I sold it to one of my guys and he says it's fine.

Thanks Daz--would you say the quality of sound and sound range i.e. treble and bass were as good as your handheld SM58?

The problem with the one I am trying is is that there just doesnt seem to be the top (treble) response that I get with my handheld JTS--which means I cant get an edge to the vocals to cut through the music im playing--

If I turn up the treble eq it just sounds horribly harsh and then feeds back -- :mad:

Is there any chance you could put me in touch with your guy so I could ask him a few questions--does he also use a handheld and be able to compare quality?

Im not convinced spending more on a Shure will make much difference--but I can hire to check it out,

crazy if you go for a headset make sure you get the free pointy boobs with it !! i couldnt trust myself with one swear under my breath far too much "im doing an 80s set and that #$%*& wants £$%*& slipknot " sorta thing.

Errrrr--you lost me Dragonfly---can you explain that :)

I also noticed that the mike is so sensitive if you breathe out through your nose it picks it up and makes gives a horrible sound over the PA, so you have to constantly switch it off.

You also cant swig a drink easily ( which I do a lot---no not alcohol ) without moving the mike, you then need a mirror to position the mike the correct distance from your face because otherwise you get distortion or not enough volume--- :mad:

Im fast going off the idea of a headset mike :sad:

basically i wouldnt trust myself with the headset when i cant find a track or the cd player is lazy wouldnt want my audience to over hear the names i give to the gear lol...... i can put a mic down but the mic on the headset is next to your mouth all the time lol

Just to answer my own question I spoke to Jamie---thanks Jamie-- :beer:

Apparently the headset radio mikes are lower quality pound for pound price wise compared to the Hand helds. They are smaller in size.

Which means that if I want the equivalent sound quality of a hand held £200 radio mike in headset style I may have to pay £300 or more.

Im now looking for a more expensive headset mike!

Might explain Daz why you werent too impressed with yours.
