We're all doomed.

Apparently, the great unwashed using t'interwibble can't do apostrophes, Grocers' or otherwise.
It's the thin end of the wedge, the first step on the slippery slope, the beginning of the end.
Life will never be the same again. :( :( :( :(

This made me laugh.
Move sparked outrage among customers. How sad a life you must live if you are outraged by a company taking off the apostrophe in their name.
Hammy`s Entertainment to Hammys Entertainment, Anyone upset yet. :D

What did I tell you, look it's spread in here already! :( :( :( :( I'm past being upset, I'm now resigned to it.

Funny this came up today, as I'm having the opposite problem! The lease for my unit originally came through with completely the wrong trading name so I sent it back with the correct one (in November!) and today the new documents have been sent to me and they've decided to add an apostrophe into "DJs", wouldn't be so bad but these are solicitors who are likely commanding £200+ per hour so you'd think copying what I'd written without adding incorrect punctuation would be a pretty easy task!!
I have read the article already.
However, what did make me laugh was the 'The end of civilisation as we know it' followed by 'we are all doomed' heading and then a link to the daily mail. It could have been any story from the last five years in the daily mail.

Aha, the Grocers' apostrophe is alive and well. Hurrrah. :D
Dan, for what it's worth, we've had this discussion before. Propeller shares your view, and I use your solicitor's convention. As far as I know, both are acceptable, although you and Al hold the higher moral ground.

Is it any wonder the bookshop had given up on the English language when it's now owned by a Russian? However, this doesn't bother me too much as I ditched Waterstone's a few years ago and I've been buying my books by mail order from The Book People instead - much better value for money!! ;)

I can see the satire in this comment with the missing apostrophe, but, it falls down on the slight factual error that, as far as I'm aware, Tim Waterstone is still alive!!

That's all well and good, but they should be copying it how I've written it!

'Move sparked outrage among customers.'
Strange - had lunch with the manager of our local Waterstones today and she hadn't noticed any outrage amongst her customers.

In all fairness Waterstones is a bit like a library. The outrage would have been understated I would suspect. Raised eyebrows would constitute outrage.

John Richards, chairman of the Apostrophe Protection Society
The what ? Is there really a society to protect every character on a keyboard ? I'm thinking of starting the Gaeilge Apastróf Cumann Cosaint - The Irish Apostrophe Protection Society, Sláinte ! :guinness:
