Hi all.

On Saturday night, during a well-earned night off and in the middle of a game of pool, I received the following text:

Dear DJ, your mobile disco has been registered on our DJ agency database. For more information please click here: (I'm not going to give the link for search engine purposes)

I did my usual thing and emailed the guy to say that I don't deal with cold marketing like this and requested, quite politely (unusual for me as they normal get passed on straight to legal) that they remove my details. I got an email back which included the line:

Apologies but I didn't have time to read all your email and I don't have time to respond to all your grievances.

However I did read enough to feel relieved that I'll be deleting you.

Is it just me or does anyone else find this comment very unprofessional and, to be honest, quite insulting?

By the way, the service in question was bookamobiledj.com and more can be found in here:

here (http://www.forum.mobilediscodirectory.co.uk/showthread.php?t=21656&highlight=bookamobiledj) and here (http://www.forum.mobilediscodirectory.co.uk/showthread.php?t=21629&highlight=bookamobiledj).

I've sent a email back and I'm not as polite as friendly as I was the first time!

Why worry about it? That attitude isn't going to get him anywhere. Engaging with him further isn't going to benefit you.....

I have had a few of these kinds of emails too just lately actually.
I agree with Neil, the reply has told you more or less how professional they are, I would not even think about them again.

The thing is, this time, it wasn't an email. It was an SMS text which is against the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 in that I hadn't opted in to receive marketing from this business.

And, as I've pointed out before, I'm very protective of my brand and reputation and I don't appreciated being added to a DJ agency's database without me being consulted first. I've always been this way!

Just checked my phone and yes, sitting there are a whole bunch of messages from BMDJ over the past few months. I never thought much of it really Dazzy as I vaguely know one of the guys who is involved in setting that up but some of the messages and prices are outrageous.

I didn't even think about the Privacy thing so I will reply to one of the messages now and tell them to stop sending me them.

Sometimes it's just not worth trying to have the last word - in fact just ignoring an email like that is better than any response.

If they get a reply they know they've got to you and it gives them some sort of satisfaction - if they get no reply it's much more dismissive than anything you could ever write.

DJ Dazzy, apologies that you felt my reply was unprofessional and insulting. The reason for it was beacuase I felt there was no need to threaten me with legal action. I am in the same boat as you and I can not understand why there is so much hostility towards me and my company.

Dear DJs ********** is a professional mobile disco company. We supply over 2000 bookings a year to the industry. The general census is that our services are welcomed by both mobile DJs and our customers.

Why is there such a taboo when it comes to mobile disco agencies? I am guessing the reason some people are protective over their contact details, is because they are also agents themselves.

You wouldn't bat an eyelid if you booked a holiday through the holiday hypermarket which is also a booking agent.

Since 2008 I have been building a database of mobile discos. I now have over 5000 DJs throughout the UK. 95% of the DJs I contact are happy to be contacted as I offer genuine bookings. At first there is expected apprehension with regards to our intentions, but when the DJ receives the customers direct contact details the DJ starts to feels confident with us. After each booking we ask the customer to send us feedback for the DJ we supplied them with. If we recieve positive feedback, the DJ is added to our A-List and is offered more gigs.

Yes admittedly a lot of the bookings on offer haven’t been great in terms of fees, but we are in a recession and at the moment the general customer across the UK cannot afford the bells and whistles that some DJs provide. We try and generate work for the higher end DJs, but at the end of the day the customer is holding the purse strings. We take a commission on average of 15% then contact the DJs to see who is willing to accept the booking. We have supplied DJs for over £500, and we have supplied DJ for less than £100. We work with the current market trends and the changes in demand across various demographics.

One of our best bookings was for Unison a few months ago which was given to a DJ called Kevin Day. He supplies a huge professional corporate set up, and the event went really well. We have worked with Kevin on several occasions. He is always happy to supply his services for us as most DJs are.

We supply DJs to P&O, Luminar, Fever Bars, Litten Tree's, Yates, Green King and many more. The core of our business is supplying mobile discos to the domestic market.

When I contact new DJs to offer them registration on our database, I am obviously met with scepticism. I have checked with the advertising standards agency that what I am doing is not against the law. One of the reasons is because I am contacting your business contact details which you have advertised in your business listings. The second reason is I am contacting you about something very specific to your services. I'm not selling anything, and I never take a penny off a DJ. The third reason is if you checked the web link in the initial SMS sent to you, you will see that you can have your details removed at any time. All future SMS messages from us include “please text STOP to have your details removed”

I could bombard you with hundreds of emails from DJs stating how happy they were for the work. Our customers prefer to book with us as we help ensure the bookings are prepared and well organised. Most DJ work full time during the day and do not have time to send contracts and planning forms to the customer. We do all of it and give the DJ a login to our website where they can view all the information submitted by us and the customer.

It doesn't matter how much negativity I am met with on this website. The amount of bookings and happy DJs I have worked with over the last 3 is proof that our service is welcomed amongst customers and DJs.

I work with many agencies across the UK including TED UK, Empire Events, Life & Soul International etc. I think it is a real shame that other agencies cannot work with us. I feel this is where the true unprofessionalism lies.

Well, this is a really easy one to answer.

First off, you have stated you have added my business to your DJ database without my express permission or, without even having the decency to contact me first asking if I would like to be included. I also told you last time that I didn't want to be involved with you and requested that you removed my details then. To have it done twice, and after I'd specifically and directly asked you not to include my details, is showing complete disrepect to my wishes. I simply don't work with companies or individuals who act in this way.

As for the second point in your post that I have highlighted, why should I have to take the time and effort, not to mention the cost of an SMS, to opt out of something I didn't opt in to in the first place? I don't remember off hand the number to text "STOP" to but, if it's a short code (ie the 5 digit numbers that you normally text to opt out from) then it may well cost more than the standard SMS charge anyway (not to mention what the number owner can make from people texting these numbers).

I make no apologies for appearing to be heavy-handed with my approach to you but I don't want anything to do with you or the service you offer as I don't like the way you operate. I feel I have made myself clear so I think things are best left at that.

Ok gonna stick my neck out here and back Alfie as I am on his database and have received various gigs from him, all good paying and genuine.

Unlike other agencies where you have to invoice them and then wait 30 days, in the norm Alfies work is paid on the day by the client the same as if you had taken the booking yourself.

Like he says he will get the booking and then its up to you if you accept it at the price, its another way of pulling bookings in and considering some DJ's on here are saying that there bookings are down then surely every little bit helps.

In principle a good idea...maybe Alfie needs to liik at how he gains the DJ...if I had an Test message saying that id been added to a database, then I would have probably been the same as Dazzy. If however I had a text/email/whatever asking if i would like to be added to the database...it a bit of info he has supplied here, then it makes more sense and I would be more open to it.

Yes you are spot on, I made the mistake of asking permission within the web link I sent instead of within the sms I sent which included the web link.

I sould'nt of used the terminology "your details have been added" becuase at anytime they can be removed. 99% of the time I keep a close eye on who is added and removed. Dazzy being a mistake he likes to point out very clearly.

I thought that and went to have a look and see if it was possibly worthwhile exercise.

I have updated the price page today. The prices are continuosly changing so we cover our advertising costs, the DJs are happy with the fees on offer and the customer finds value in our booking management.

I am always interested in your comments, It's very difficult to get the prices right, and to make a modest profit to imporve my service.

I have my eye on a larger more professional web site but with a 10k quote for what I want, I need to make something from each booking without taking the :Censored:

Yes I need to get more pictures and better quality.

With Dazzy 100% on this.

Have I spoke to you on the phone? Have you spoke to a DJ that has received work from me?

You shoudn't draw to a conclusion without looking into things yourself.

There are too many of you that follow each other like sheep on this website. What someone says the others agree with. You have no idea what my integrity is like. You can not judge me by looking at my website only.

Contact me and I will tell you everything about what we do. I am not a scammer, but I had to contact DJs some how. How would you of done it if you wanted to start a legitimate mobile disco booking service?

When the holiday hypermarket started out, how would they have contacted hotels and airplines? Would they call them, email them or text them maybe? They would of needed to get hold of the supplier somehow. Why am I such a bad person for doing it in the mobile disco industry. It's crazy!

Back in 2009 the directory advertised DJs email addresses. I sent an email to everyone which took me weeks of copying and pasting. I was not spamming. I was contacting dj regarding a ligitimate business opportunity. And there is now proof of this on the forum.

Over 400 DJs replied and were happy to be on the databse. Most of them have recieved gigs through me. Some with not so great money, and some with good money.

My intentions are good. I wouldn't still be doing this 3 years later if I was not operating with good intentions.

Because people were being spammed and this website was harvested for emails.

It has nothing to do with the nature of the business or networking and gaining work and everything to do with ethics and privacy.

]Like he says he will get the booking and then its up to you if you accept it at the price[/COLOR], its another way of pulling bookings in and considering some DJ's on here are saying that there bookings are down then surely every little bit helps.

But you're missing the point here. I don't want Alfie to get me the booking. I told him that over 2 years ago. So, I've already asked him to remove my details from his database then, when all seems well, I'm back on there again. Is this right? Is it justified? I don't think so.

Also, the mobile number I received the text on is registered with the Telephone Preference Service for both business and personal purposes. So, under the UK Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003, it is an offence to send me unsolicited SMS texts like this. Before sending any mass-communications like this, the sender is required to check the recipient numbers against TPS lists and this has obviously not been done.

And to add a bit more light to my position, my personal circumstances play a big part in how I run my disco. I only work 2 nights a week due to the day job and I'm doing residencies on both nights. That's the reason I cut down on advertising this year. I don't particularly need any more bookings at this point in time. I'm lucky in that respect.

Finally, don't get me wrong. I'm not advising anyone not to use BAMDJ or any other service Alfie has to offer. It's up to the individual to make their own minds up and I'm sure there are plenty of DJs out there who would be grateful for the extra help in getting bookings. Even I use a small number of online directories which do generate leads for me occasionally. But, as some of you may have realised, by reading between the lines of course, that BAMDJ is not for me.

If I've offended any body by contacting them I apologise. But seriously, take a step back and have a look at what you are saying Dazzy. I contacted you again by mistake. Why would I want to experience your hostility again? You are the last person I'd want to work with.

Thankfully there are DJs a little more open minded, and because of that they have benefitted from allowing me to contact them.

All this rubish about TPS and legislation. 99% of DJs don't care. You are the only person that ever had a serious isse with this.

A DJ telephoned me this afternoon after reading these posts. He told me, without naming anyone, that he "goes on here for a laugh" then he registered his details with me.

I can't wait to show him how we operate, and get him his first gig. I'll make sure he leaves a post on here when he does.

Djs just want work. It's that simple, and yes if you have 2 residencies you are overlooking that there are hundreds of DJs in the UK with less than 5 bookings for this year so far.

I WAS NOT SPAMMING in 2009. Spamming is targeting any email or mobile number without any regard to who is being sent the message. I was contacting specific people clsoely linked to the mobile disco industry about a mobile disco issues.

How am I meant to contact DJs? Pigeon? DJs leave they're contact information on your website to help them improve their gig prospects. My emails and sms messages to DJs do just that.

I have a 6 night residency in Southamtpon, I also do a few kids parties during the days and early evening. I have been a DJ for 17 years. I know the industry very well, and DJs recognise this which is why they are happy to work with me. They don't work for me, if anything, I work for them.

I'd like to end this thread also, but everytime I see my name in mud on this website I must reply to defend myself.

In future if I contact anyone again by mistake simply remind me to remove your details. It is difficult to keep tabs on over 5000 contact records.

Thank you to those that backed me up. I did not ask anybody to comment on here. Thank you. Alfie Jenks

OK Folks, since Darren wished to lock this thread if the Original poster agreed, ( which he has done) , then I shall close it for now. If there is a good reason to unlock it, then we will consider it carefully.

If I've offended any body by contacting them I apologise. But seriously, take a step back and have a look at what you are saying Dazzy. I contacted you again by mistake. Why would I want to experience your hostility again? You are the last person I'd want to work with.

He has every right to be annoyed. Why put the comment for?

All this rubish about TPS and legislation. 99% of DJs don't care. You are the only person that ever had a serious isse with this.

So you run a business and don't care about the legal constraints? Dear oh dear. What a way to run a business. Personally, I hate people ringing me or contacting me without being asked as I am a member of the corporate TPS and domestic version too. Secondly, how do you know that 99% of DJs don't care? What a strange thing to post.

I can't wait to show him how we operate

I think you have already shown how you operate and your disregard for people's privacy and the law.

Really? I thought spam was unsolicited mail.

How am I meant to contact DJs?

Not by harvesting a private directory and contacting members without them wishing to be contacted. Ever heard of marketing or advertising? Pro mobile? Nope, 'cos doing this is free, isn't it?

I'd like to end this thread also, but everytime I see my name in mud on this website I must reply to defend myself. I have given you that chance and you have now lost the right to reply through being rude to my members and admitting you don't bother with the TPS.

I would have thought that it would have been easy for any professional company with proper and legal systems.
