Steve - if you use the search function and enter a few likely terms (Glen Miller would be one for example) you'll find a few threads with playlist suggestions in them.

English 40's or American 40's ??

Why the distinction?

Ink Spots, Bing Crosby, Mel Torme, Frank Sinatra, Spike Jones, Fats Waller, Perry Como, Louis Jordan, Mils Brothers, Judy Garland, Nat King Cole, Leadbelly, Jo Stafford, Guy Lombardo.

That takes us up to 1945, courtesy of Google and Wikipedia, cos my memory sure isn't up to the task. :o :o :o

Didn't you find anything suitable or haven't you tried searching yet?

Al Jolson & George Formby, although performing from much earlier, were popular in the 40's ;)

There are a couple of Mastermix discs that would be worthwhile getting.

Mastermix old time party
and I can't remember the other one! -

A lot of big band was popular too. Most of the above is fairly slow tempo'd, so listen to it first to get an idea and then play towards the start and fit in when applicable during the evening.
