What did you do with your old cd collection?

Now that my old cd collection is taking up too much room at home. I was wondering what some of you did with your old cd collections. Once you'd ripped them to your hard drive.

I know that some of will have kept theirs, and I'm tempted to as well, but sod it. If i can get a couple of quid for it. It may as well go the journey.

Can anyone recommend somewhere that buys these? Some people have even suggested I take them to a car boot sale. As I'll get nixie for them advertising them on Ebay/Gumtree that sort of thing.

So any suggestions good people?:)

Wouldn't selling off your CD collection make your digital collection illegal? You a licensed to make a COPY with ProDub, and if you don't own the original, then it's no longer a copy.

That's my understanding of the situation. You have to keep the originals. I think I can see why this is the case, to stop folk ripping a collection, selling it on and the same process being replicated ad infinitum.

Angela is correct, but apart from the legal side what if you lost/had stolen your HD (and whatever back-up you have) you'd be totally without all those tunes.

Why not take a couple of evenings and transfer them all to wallet cases?

There's no value left in original CDs - apart from the occasional obviously rare one - so no need to keep the boxes and leaflets pristine.

We have an Ikea rack with a few hundred special/personal CDs stuck away in a corner of the library but everything else has been transferred to one of these cases, catalogued (i.e. case number, sleeve number) on a spreadsheet and are now gathering dust in the loft.

I've kept all mine from my original stint on the road in the 90s. I have about 6 flight cases packed with them and several other storage boxes.

I love having them, although I am 100% digital when playing out, I love the look and feel of the real thing, so will be hanging on to them.

Most of my CD collection is now in zipped cd cases (got rid of the plastic cases and outer sleeves for most of them) and i still buy in CD collections as well as Karaoke collections :)

There are those that buy all their CDs and Karaoke discs - rip them to a HDD, then sell on the originals !?!?!

Me too. But I do collect music as a personal obsession!!

Mind you, as I think I've mentioned before, I got my vinyl collection valued a few years ago and I think the total price was about 30% of what I'd worked out (roughly!) it had cost me to buy. If it wasn't for the exception of a few higher value LPs and special edition singles, then my collection would be pretty much carboot sale fodder! :eek: Still, a lot of the music is personal and holds memories for me so I did the best thing by keeping hold of it.

I remember many years ago (just after I'd finished an extended period on the nightclub circuit) I was moving home and didn't have much storage space in the new place. I decided I wouldn't be needing the majority of my vinyl anymore and proceeded to dump around 80% in the local skip.


I still break out in a cold sweat at that decision to this day. What was I thinking!!!! :eek: :(

Fair enough, you might have two or three digital playout systems, so the chances are that you'd never need to resort to CDs... but, if you're legally obliged to keep the original CDs, might as well incorporate them into a backup plan?

I have a couple of CD wallets loaded up with filler CDs for that purpose :)

I keep a couple of slappa cases in my gig bag for backup, but most of mine are in various cupboards/cases around the house

The other consideration is that if you originally ripped your CDs in a format lower than WAV, eg: a heavily compressed MP3, then you can re-rip them at any point to WAV now that larger, cheaper hard drives are easily found....as long as you always have the originals in the loft, garage, spare room etc

I have kept all of mine and they are stored away in cases and are stacked in the spare room. I have a glass cabinet next to my office space which houses all of my Numan/Depeche Mode/NIN rarities etc. I have the rare vinyl in cases at my sisters in the loft.

I made mistakes on more than one occasion when I got rid of stuff that was worth a fair few quid (Madness rarities for example) so I vowed a few years ago not to do it again. I don't tend to buy CD's anymore unless they are for the collections so I can't see the massive stack of boxes getting any bigger but I do think it's a shame sometimes that they are all sat there doing nothing.

It took me a couple of years but I managed to rip every track on every CD that I own. I did it at 320kps MP3 at the time and duplicated the HD's too.

I'm still using them! Bought a nice MC6000 and laptop last year and not even turned it on yet let alone learnt how to use it or started ripping the CDs. I did condense 12 large crates that totalled about a quarter of a tonne to just 2 which has a good 95% of anything I'm going to need. These go to the gigs (plus various wallets with CDs burnt from downloads) and the other 10 or so crates live at my parents' house. One day I guess I'm going to have to transfer them to the unit and try to make them take up as little space as possible.

I think most people have covered the situation already.

Also you never know---you might get your digital collection nicked on a gig:eek: :eek: :eek: :eek:

Dont forget you are allowed to take your basic digital collection on the gig but the back up copy has to stay on the fireplace at home.

Just nip home and grab them if theres a problem:D :D :D :D :D :D :D

You're in good company Shaun. That's exactly how I read it too. I have fewer than that, and have a basically similar unit in the living room, but it only holds about half the collection. The other half is still in cases in the shed. :(

Somebody needs to tell the big name DJs that its essentially illegal to rip their collection then sell it on.

Ive had a few conversations recently with producers, label owners, and top level professional DJ was even aware of the existance of ProDub...seems like another case of picking on the little guys!.

Well, further to my post a year ago (#23 above), I've still got the MC6000 and laptop sat around doing nothing, but I'm finally starting to seriously investigate the long process of ripping all the CDs. I'm just so wary of ensuring I get it right first time as I really don't want it to be something I ever have to waste my life on again in the future!
