View Full Version : Interesting new take on the Wedding Dj reinvented

One of my wedding planner friends has "liked" Wedbeat on FB and it's titled "the Wedding DJ reinvented".

To give you a quick summary in laymans terms the B&G make up a list of their favourite tunes in the virtual studio lasting 3, 4 or 5hrs they are then mixed together, put onto a disc and sent out to the couple.

Looks like a good service, all legal through PRS, PPL etc and I can see it having it's place for instance when the Wedding ceremony is abroad.

But to me it does seem a little pricey.

Can't imagine it taking off too much.

Very expensive IMO, especially by the time you've paid for speaker/light hire.

Nice idea though.

I've just had a go at the free playlist - you choose genres and they pick the artists and songs for you. It's a minimum of three genres and you can't choose a genre more than once, so useless if you want all rock or 70's.

Apart from up to 5 favourite tunes you have no say in what songs are chosen or what order they're in, in fact you only get to see the playlist after you've paid for it.

It's for people who don't care about music!

Technically true, but apparently you can alter the time slots for each genre, so I think you could cut two slots down to sort of one tune each, thus giving you effectively one genre only.

I don't do normal!

Did manage to get Velvet Underground's 'Venus In Furs' as my first dance choice though!

So, you go for the £249 package, then hire in some speakers and lights...and err, you may as well pay for a DJ?

Have you not read the warning on their site? DJ's won't play a seamless flow of music, won't take requests, will insist on playing cheesy crap, and wittering inanely over everything. ;) :D :D

Funnily enough, I'm a little amused that it's put onto CD. I'd have expected USB/MP3 to be a more modern solution, apart from the fact that it's dearer.

And also, if they'd hired kit from a certain noteworthy Scottish DJ on here, it wouldn't play CD's anyway. Not unless they'd given him three months notice, or something. :sofa:

Promising the earth, the Wedding DJ is cheesy, sounds like an amateur, costs a fortune and is terrible on the night.

How insulting!

So how on earth can a pre-recorded CD take requests?

Also reading the supposed customer testimonies, one claims they danced till 4am, am I to assume they didn't start until 11pm, or did they play the CD twice?

IMO, if the price was £29.99, they would have a chance, at £299 I think the odds of it taking off are just about zero.

Which plenty of DJs do, even if it isn't your style personally.

More importantly, this is an accurate representation of the "cheesy Wedding DJ" caricature which many clients are keen to avoid, so they are using it as a sales tool.

Until prospective clients learn that many of us are nothing like this in reality either by experiencing a "proper" Wedding DJ in action or by being educated by our industry as a whole then plenty of people (including DJs) will use this caricature as a sales aid.

I know I have.

Okay so you get your disk which is, say three hours long, and if they are worth their salt builds up to a climax at the end of the evening, say the last hour. But on the day the speeches over-run by an hour (which happens regularly!) so now your three hour disc only has two hours to cover, how does it decide what to leave out to ensure the evening still builds to the climax, same [problem as an ipod wedding, all of a sudden you need someone to sort it out!

It makes no business sense to have people manually creating individual mixes for each order.

And regardless of the sales talk it's probably all done automatically, I'd guess it randomly picks songs from a pool of tried and tested popular songs from each genre and then based on an algorithm places them in play order and mixes them.

I'm sure it's a fairly sophisticated programme to make sure there's no really awful clangers in there, but I seriously doubt an individual is slaving over the playlist and worrying what song goes where.

If I was being really cynical I'd say there's already a pre-mixed selection for every genre (or several variations) and everybody gets very similar results!

I don't like the idea and I can't see it taking off big time.
I can imagine that some people will take advantage of it and use it but where's the personality and interraction from the DJ coming from?

It may serve it's purpose to some of the people out there but I'd like to think that most people (especially Brides & Grooms) would actually respect the fact that their day is (should be) the most important day of their lives.

Well considering that according to some folk on here, their interaction consists of announcing the first dance, the buffet and last orders, I don't see any serious disadvantages for the CD in that respect. ;)

Fundamental flaws in parts of that. :d

1: They wouldn't be able to hire kit from the DJ mentioned...PERIOD! - he doesn't do hire. :D

2: No matter how much notice provided there is no longer the facility for him to play CD's. :D

Ok...carry on., Nothing more to see here. :d

I bet you have been out and buried the cd players in the ground somewhere just to make sure of it :D

The downside is once you have recieved your nicely mixed cd back from them, its too late to change your mind if you want to include other songs instead.
This idea is just one step up from the ipod wedding IMO.

On top of that, those websites that proudly support these idiots should be ashamed of themselves.

Under The Vintage Veil (http://underthevintageveil.com/)
Peonies & Pearls (http://www.peoniesandpearls.co.uk/)
Boho Weddings & Events (http://www.bohoweddingsandevents.com/)
Rock n Roll Bride (http://www.rocknrollbride.com/)

I wholeheartedly recommend we all flood their websites, Facebook and twitter pages with messages about how they should be ashamed of themselves for promoting this crap.

Not that I've ever needed to check, but would you expect every venue to have a CD player that can play MP3 discs? I know it's old hat, but a lot of the venues around here, their stock sound system is as old as the hills.

Well, the bottom line here is that anyone who puts so little value on the job that we do isn't our client, and we should just move on.

No, to be serious, I disagree. Lord knows, it could be like shovelling sand against the tide, but if they've gone for that dreadful CD because we can't be trusted to give them the service they want, shouldn't we be educating them? It's not as if it's a huge cost saving exercise, cos we all reckon that with PA and lighting hire, it's more costly than hiring some of us.

Hell yeah, just looked at it, for a 4 hour CD with 3 genres (I chose 60s,70s & 80s) it came in at £199.

I could do the whole thing for the same price (occasionally slightly less) :p :D

Looking past all the advertising basically they're asking £249 for an MP3 CD of 60 or so random songs with minimal input into what the songs or artists are or what order they're played in!

I bet people are overwhelmed when they receive the finished product and realise what they've actually paid for!

I'm wondering if it's a sideline for one of these companies that supply music for bars, restaurants, shops etc. All the equipment and licenses would already be in place so minimal start-up costs.

And he's just got back to me and can do a Northern Soul mix with no problem but would need a track list for the Ska and 60's Garage.

I'm going to take him up on Northern Soul one and tell him to mix, use effects and be as creative as he wants. If I saw an NS mix CD in a shop for £8 I wouldn't think twice about getting it just out of interest.
