Advertising your disco over the mic at a function?

and what do you say if you do it?

Nope.. i mention my own name in my intro usually, but don't do anything along the lines of "if you've had fun this evening, remember we're revolution discos.. " etc.

It would just seem out of place to me, but then so do advertising banners, yet plenty of people still use them so i guess its just opinion.

I generally only do it right at the end of the night and tell them who they've been listening to and who's provided the entertainment.

I normally thank the guests for their company, get a round of applause for the people whose party it was, then thank the venue (always works well if you go back on a regular basis), tell them to have a safe journey, tell them who I was/am and then goodnight.

Using jingles and advertising in a pub would be OK I suppose.

I have seen guy work who started off saying "This is xxxxx disco" and thought it sounded a bit naff.

i normally use my name in my intro, i think its just a matter of what works best for people. I prefer this because people are usually sober and might actually be listening to what you are saying!

Not everyone uses this method of advertising. We don't, and I don't think I'll be introducing it anytime soon.

On second thoughts, I don't think I'll be buying a banner either. I don't think I'd ever use it. I normally say the company name in the intro too, subtle as possible. I think it would be unprofessional to keep going on about who you are - it's not Radio after all. Plus, I believe that as we are being hired for someone else's event, the emphasis should be on them, not ourselves!

Strange--when I work with Bands and Discos they usually have their name shown--mine is in very large letters--

Its only if your a household name that you dont bother---but then again Ringo had the Beatles on his drum= you dont get bigger than that!

Hmm.. well the way Daz described it does make it sound quite pro actually.. like the idea of thanking the venue staff as well, i usually just give my regards to the happy couple/birthday person and wish people a safe journey home. Might try and drop my name in on Friday.. providing its a good night of course, else i'll say james' :D :D :D

I don't think that's the case at all. After all, most companies, people and services introduce themselves in some way. I always tell people who I am and who my roadie is - so they can come and ask us personally for requests. Can't see that there is anything "crass" about mentioning your show's name at that point. "Good evening, we're The Revelation Roadshow and we'll be looking after you all until midnight. If there's anything we can do for you all you need to do is have a word with Tim or of course the good looking one, that'll be me, Matt...." and so on.

As for the end of the evening, I used to do little plug, but for some reason haven't for a while. I do however always give a big thankyou to the audience for helping us have a really good time and sometime we even get a big clap afterwards!

That sounds professional---I think it depends on how confident you sound over the mike---if you really cant hack it---dont do it.

I would say nay..
Firstly my disco is not really that kind of disco.. we have some announcements over the disco.. and for the hyped up school things we do more 'talk' but for things like weddings, which i do a lot of' i tend to keep it to a minimum.. so the thought of promoting my disco would be a deffo nono over the mike.. but i do admit to having a banner fixed to the table.. so witha bit of UV it looks rather cool :teeth:

OK, I mis-interpreted the thread. I say at the end "I've been Murrough O'Brien, you've been a great crowd (audience at weddings :) ) until we meet again, its good night and safe journey home"

I leave this to the end and would not say Im murrough half way through or even at the begining, nor would I 'advertise' by stopping the show and speaking about myself.

For my name, i dont have it in big letters. I have Murrough Professional Events and a coded number on sticker sheets (about the size of cigarette packet) and these are stuck on every peice of equipment, not all obvious but a lot notice them on the speakers at some point. This way it looks like Im a real pro big timer stage gear guy, and the name gets around how I want it.

Always introduce with names, then at the end of the night repeat the names and the show name.
After all we are running a business and advertising (in whatever form) is normal for businesses
