I've often wondered, but unfortunately I don't know

Hasn't it been used in computer systems for longer? IE patch panels, switches etc

Furthest history of it I know was 1930's telecomunications equipment was mounted in a 19" rack. Further used from 1950's in the telephone echanges. Anyone think of any earlier than that? I had a look but cant find anything.
