Here's a new thread to add to.....(Disco related only)

Don't you hate it when........

You're playing to a busy dancefloor and they're loving the music. You put the next tune on and a couple of people suddenly stop dancing, turn around and look at you as if to say "What is this?" because you've upset their flow and they don't recognise it and then all of a sudden they realise what it is and start dancing again.

This happened to me 3 times last night with the same 2 young ladies. They were on the dancefloor literally all night and loving it but on 3 occasions there were tracks that they didn't recognise at first. The funny thing was that on one of them (Red Light - 'Get Out My Head'), one of the girls was dancing right in front of me and had requested it earlier. It didn't go with what I was playing at the time she requested it so I waited until I went into tracks with the same style. She has asked me a couple of times for it and when I eventually played it, she came over and asked "What's this, can you play my track please?" when I was actually playing it.

I said "Listen" and she stood there and said "Oh yeah, sorry!".

Not really annoying as such as it makes me laugh.

So.....

Don't you hate it when......

Don't you hate it when......

People post threads, asking " Don't you hate it when? " :D :D :D :D :D

Inconsiderate brain dead pond life sit/stand exactly where you're taking bits of kit out for the umpteenth time in a few minutes. And are surprised/dismayed when you ask them to move, or clatter them with a speaker.

Venues set up an obstacle course in your honour, so you can show how easily you can get a two foot wide trolley through a sixteen inch gap.

Having been in a venue for two hours with all the kit, you eventually are granted access, and ten minutes later "Aren't you ready yet". Grrrrrrrr.

More as a few brain cells fire into life.

When you have spent quite a while in consultation with the person hosting the event discussing the music, making sure you have all of their 'special/memorable' tracks and you are happy that you have covered all your bases.

Then you get there and they give you a further list of obscure tracks that they insist must be played.

You've started setting up in the pre agreed location at the venue, client turns up and decides the whole layout of the venue needs to change requiring me to drag the deckstand about 70% complete across the venue.

Should have stood my ground, as should the venue manager but one of those things! First time it's happend as well so not too bad!

I have indubitably heard of exactly the practice you so eloquently describe, but to me that reeks of desperation, and is bad form. A bit like having a Dog, and barking yourself. ;)

Or as described above, and about three tracks in, binning the playlist, and reverting to the Usual Suspects.

That used to happen to me every time at a regular gig with the same girl, nearly every song she would turn round and give me the "what the hell is this?" look, then started dancing when she realised she knew it. Also annoying is when they give you that look, then see that all their friends love it and join in!

I did a wedding last year and had a cd done of the B&G first dance and the songs they wanted payed during the night. They already had them from iTunes, but wanted a memento of the day. After they'd done the first dance, the disapeared for a while, later I saw them and went up with the CD. I kissed the bride on the cheek (she was a good friend and had done her dad's 50th the NYE before) told her she looked lovely and shook the groom's hand, and gave them the cd.

Was scarleh went few days later found out it was her sister & her hubby !

Totally agree!
That happens more often than not. Some people seem to think that the music revolves around them (guests mainly).

"Can you play Rihanna for me but I'm just nipping out for a fag first so don't play it until I come back".

"Can you play Rihanna for me but I'm just nipping to the loo".

"Can you play Rihanna for me NEXT as I am going soon" (and they're still there 30 minutes after you've played it".

....and the classic...

"Can you play Rihanna for me...Come on, it's MY birthday too".

Not this weekend just gone but the one before, there was an absolutely stunning young lady at a function I did. I spoke to her earlier on in the evening and she was really lovely. A few hours later and probably a few glasses of wine down the line, she was rude and it was a total turn off...shame really.

...... the bride and groom get so drunk before you even get there so end up falling out.
You set up through a drunken crowd - excuse me please...excuse me please...excuse me please..etc etc etc etc etc etc
The bride then staggers up to bed early and won't let the groom into the bridal suite.
Everyone else starts having a go at each other so venue says pack up and go home early - I really hate that :D

Got a wedding in a lovely venue, suggested setting up early to make life easy for a 7.45pm start. Venue vetoed this, as guests will "see the kit". :daft:

What time do they suggest I turn up to ensure a 7.45pm start?

At least it isn't 8pm.

... when the ex club DJ photographer comments you've got a lot of kit.. What, 2 tops, a bin, a booth, 2 poles, 4 movers & a wash light?!

Also when the same tog keeps going on about how he has to be away by 8.30pm so can you just go pester the bride & groom to get the cake cut & 1st dance out of the way? Er no, bud (he kept calling me 'bud'.. Very annoying) I won't do that.

Then when the cake has been cut you hear the bride ask where 'that bloody DJ has disappeared to' ... Hello lady THAT DJ is RIGHT HERE in front of you helping to move the cake table! Grrr. One thing.. I'm not sure how I'd achieved the status of 'that bloody DJ'.. I'd been on show & available throughout the proceedings. Some people! As is always the case I'd been assured by the DM just how lovely the couple were. Yeah, right. Lovely! If looks could kill I'd have been six foot under.

Some adjustment of the meaning of the word 'lovely' is needed methinks.
Maybe 'unreasonable' or 'recalcitrant'? :)

Don't you hate it when......

People resurrect 6 year old threads, and everything in that thread is still relevant!

Funny really.... In 6 years, things have moved on so quickly technology wise and things have made our lives a bit easier (or supposed to have), yet venues and customers appear to be doing the same old, same old.

I think that out of all the things that have annoyed me over the years doing this job, the one that REALLY gets me (or got to me) and USED to wind me up beyond belief.... was the old 'Cut Throat' move which was more often than not made by those self absorbed, self important, disrespectful idiots (there didn't appear to be an age limit whilst using the move).

Looking back to my original post from 6 years ago, I commented that I thought it was quite funny when guests requested something and didn't recognise it, or missed it when it eventually got played. Yes, that was funny and I still think that....BUT, the 'Cut Throat' move will always be one of those things that will grate on me. The difference these days is, I laugh it off and don't let it get to me.

I would NEVER EVER think of doing that move. It is not in my nature to do something like that, DJ or not. That's because I am not disrespectful or self obsessed and think that the DJ should only play music that I like, have requested or can dance to (I don't do the dancing part!). What makes somebody think they have the right to tell you to STOP playing what you are currently playing because THEY don't like it?

Even if the Bride, Groom, Birthday Boy or Birthday Girl or the person paying my wages gave me that signal, I would ignore it and claim that somebody else requested it (whether they had or not). It took me a while to engage IGNORAMIS MODE, but I eventually did it and it probably annoyed them even more.

One word - TOUGH! :)

There's truth in that! Yes, most of the 'cut throat' brigade have been female, in my experience......Although saying that, there have been 2 incidents with males doing it over the years that I will never forget. One stands out much, much more than the other and I think it is worth mentioning (although I did mention it back in a Good Gig/Bad Review at the time).

It must have been at least 12 years ago now, and it was at a Christmas party night at my then hotel residency. Up until Mr 'I'm top dog of the cut throat crew' decided to make his thoughts on the music I was playing (that nearly everybody was dancing to), very clear and very rudely....it had been a good night with lots of dancing to almost everything I had been playing.

One thing I do not remember, is the exact song that had obviously annoyed him so much. I DO remember that the dance floor was packed though. Everybody appeared to be happy apart from this one particular bloke and he caught my eye (I wish he hadn't). He stood out like a sore thumb and I'm not sure why he was even on the dance floor because I hadn't noticed him previously during the night. I think it was in the last hour or so and everybody was still going strong. It was one of those nights where guests were walking off the dance floor at times and giving me the thumbs up, but they needed a rest because they'd been dancing all night.

Anyway, the easiest way to describe the scene would be to say that everybody that was enjoying themselves were moving colour, and this guy was rigid and in old skool black & white, just staring at me from across the dance floor, probably only 20 feet away. When I first noticed him, I smiled.....he just stared. When I looked back, he started shaking his head. I smiled back. He stared again, and then did the cut throat thing and smiled back.
I wasn't too impressed by that, but just smiled back. When he caught my eye again, he did the cut throat thing again. I shook my head and looked away. I think I was looking through some CD's at the time to avoid eye contact and when I turned around, he was stood by the side of me just grinning and staring.

"Can I help?" I asked..... "Cut it!" he said.... I turned and pointed to the dance floor, telling him that I wasn't cutting it because the floor was full. "It's :Censored:" he replied. "Ok, what would YOU like to listen to?" I asked.... He stood there and just shook his head. "You're the expert" he said... I laughed and tried to add some humour to the conversation....."I'm no expert, but I'm definitely not a mind reader" I replied, smiling. He wasn't impressed and said "Just turn this :Censored: off and play something decent"..... "You're not getting it, are you?" I replied...."Unless you tell me what YOU want me to play, how am I supposed to know?".... He grinned at me, shook his head and then replied with "You're a :Censored: DJ my friend" and just as I was about to open my mouth, he shook his head again and sauntered back off with his bottle of Becks in his hand. He stood back in the same spot on the edge of the dance floor, staring, grinning, shaking his head and doing the cut throat thing.

I couldn't help it, he had gotten to me and I turned my back on the dance floor and shouted out :Censored:, knowing nobody would hear me over the music. I was riled big time. When I looked around again, he was still there with that look on his face. We had eye contact again and I urged him to come over. When he did finally saunter back over to me a few minutes later, I asked him "What's the problem? If you don't like the music, give me some idea of what you like and I'll see if it works with what I am doing"....He stood there grinning and eventually said...."You should know what I like, you're a :Censored: DJ my friend".... By then, I was really starting to lose the plot. I'd sensed that he was on the wind up, but I didn't like it. What gave him the right? For around 20 minutes I had lost all concentration on the crowd in front of me, all those that were enjoying themselves because I'd been concentrating on him. To be honest, I don't think anybody else noticed.

So, after a few minutes more of him just hanging around being a pain in the backside, I eventually said to him...."Do me a favour, go and TRY and enjoy yourself. It is a Christmas party. If you can't tell me what you want, come back when you have thought of something"....Out of the blue, he suddenly said "Play some Wu Tang Clan!".....I shook my head and then did my best to ignore him, leaving him just hanging around until he started looking through my CD's. I had to tell him to go away in the end as I was getting increasingly wound up with him. When he went back to his spot again at the side of the dance floor, he was stood with another 2 guys. He was speaking to them and pointing at me. They started looking over and eventually one of them came over. He was full of himself and had a bottle of beer in each hand and said "Chuck some Hip Hop on Bruv".... I laughed and said "Is that for him over there? I'll see what I can do".... "Fair play" said the bloke. I had no intention of playing any Hip Hop, especially as we were due to finish soon.

When the end of the night did arrive, almost everybody was dancing to the usual suspects.........apart from you know who!
As the last song faded out, one of the guests on the dance floor started clapping and everybody joined in. I thanked them and said good night.....and then, Mr Cut Throat shouted out how :Censored: the DJ was....and then disappeared.

To cover myself that night, I decided to tell the C&B Manager what had gone on just in case there was some comeback. In fact, I felt so strongly about what had happened, I emailed the General Manager when I got home. When I got up early the following morning, I saw his reply asking me to pop in for a chat. I thought the worst straight away but need not have worried because it was just a chat as he wanted to know what had gotten me so wound up. As we sat there in reception having a casual chat about what had happened, Mr Cut Throat suddenly appeared at the desk. He was checking out. I nudged the GM and told him that the guy in question was stood at the reception desk. He said "Leave it, he looks like he's had a big night" and laughed.

Around 5 minutes later, I left and went out to my van. Sat in a rather flash car next to my van was Mr Cut Throat with his head in his hands. I thought twice about it, but decided to go for it and knocked on the car window. He wound it down and said "Hello, can I help you?"..... "Do you remember me?" I asked.... "Should I?" he replied.... "Well, you called me a :Censored: DJ last night" I replied. "Really? I don't remember?" he replied. "Are you sure?"..... "Oh, I'm sure mate" I said..."I wasn't the one drinking".... He couldn't apologise enough! "I'm ever so....." he said. "Don't bother!" I replied and just before I got into my van, I called him something not very nice!

(Long time since I wrote an essay - PHEW!).

Its hard if not sometimes impossible to please everyone.

One of my last gigs was an Army gig.
I played background music while they ate.
During that time an elderly gentlemen got up and asked me to turn it down as it was causing havoc with his hearing aid.
He said I could turn it up after the meal as he was going then, which was very kind of him.
So I turned it down.
About 10 seconds later someone shouted "turn it up, we can hear it"
So I turned it up just a little.

The meal ended so I started playing some northern soul.
A woman came up and said "you can get that rubbish off, I want modern music"
So I mixed it u pa little with modern stuff.
Then someone came up asking for Lily Allen track I didn't have. I apologised for not having it.
Next thing I know she is screaming from the middle of the dance floor. "Play Lily Allen"
She started shouting that I was crap.
I just ignored her and carried on.

Gigs can range from terrible, to the next time where its a great night with everyone up dancing and singing along.

You've literally only just started playing low background music at a car show & an older gent approaches you to ask if this music will be on all day. He's not happy at your answer that no, not quite all day but until 3 o' clock and rants that a car show should be completely devoid of music. He goes on to lighten your mood though, when he announces that he's leaving the event.

Later, as I'm wrapping cables & packing my van to go home lots of other people approach me & tell me they very much enjoyed the music throughout. What? Even the Matt Monro track the Mini fans asked for? "Well", I said as 'On Days Like These' came to an end... "If I had any street cred when I pressed play on that one I certainly don't have any now". Cue titters from behind me.. Ah well 'twas a lovely day despite the miserable old git :D

PS.. Had I known the Matt Monro track better I probably would have made any excuse not to play it. Oh my GOD it's awful, hardly befitting a happy occasion on a warm summer's day :(

Justin, years ago when I was doing store launches for the Co-op, I had poppy sellers standing near me, on rota. You've invested a stack of money in Lightrider to control your lighting (which let me down BADLY several weeks ago and I no longer trust), and then Chauvet release a version of SoundSwitch at such a ridiculously low price that you have to pull the trigger :(

(for info, went to my local NADJ chapter meeting tonight, saw SoundSwitch in action....and fell in LOVE :heart1:...goodbye Lightrider)

When a client gives you a usb stick with a track on they need playing (for a demo which had been arranged - Yes I tried to get this before the gig).

The problem was, I was already up and running, playing BGM.

I've only 2 accessable USB slots on my laptop, one running my DMX controller, and one running my MC 6000.

So unplugged the dmx usb, plugged in their usb stick, copied the file off, plugged my light controller back in.

Guess what. Light controller no longer working.

On top of that the midi link to my mc6000 also stopped working. (Audio was fine).

Looks like plugging in the usb stick killed my USB drivers :(.

S2L and laptop control was in order for the night.

Sod that! I'd never insert an unknown USB into my laptop(s)!

This one's easy. Customer provided USB sticks go in the spare laptop only. Laptop audio comes through a USB soundcard into my DJ controller. My own sticks, fine.. i know where they've been!

What the?????!!!!!

Don't you just hate it when this happens? This is part of the timeline for this Saturday evening.

Now it's an evening only job for me. I arrive at the same time as the band, do the first dance and then bugger off for a ciggy for a couple of hours until they're done and I take over (so I'm there longer than them....by three hours to be exact)

I'm already wondering about the music during they're 30 minute "break" (poor darlings need a rest half way through). Apparently they're supposed to be providing it....well see, eh? ;)

I'm really not fussed because I've got plenty of time to eat before I even leave home, but thanks for the offer guys! :(

.... You notice that one side of your PA is brighter than the other. With the speakers you only bought brand new in March. Rrrrr. The horn isn't dead. Far from it. Just noticeably reduced output compared to the other. Now, both sound good still.. But which one is faulty? The duller one or the brighter one? Hmmm. My money is on the duller one. They're both still in warranty so the slightly duller one is going back first. Very inconvenient...

These things happen & by all anecdotal evidence no brand is immune from trouble so it's just 'one of those things'.

I always have my own food.

I do find it fascinating how bands have a table, food, beers all round very often, and the DJ is ignored. The band play 2 x 45 mins, the DJ does 3 hours sometimes more. I often have more kit that the band too, with their two Mackie Thumps and a PAR bar.

The bands have food etc in their contract - DJ’s usually don’t.

If you want it, ask for it.

Yep, that is all that is needed.

Anything over 6 hours I ask for food and drink (not fussed about a full meal, sandwich or something is fine). If this isn't 'acknowledged' I do remind people. Never had a problem and bizarrely seems to improve the way I am treat - a human as opposed to a machine playing music lol.

and and brides who say, 'no special songs, or requests', and don't mention that the groom and his family are from Australia, and want to be singing along to their favourite Aussie drinking songs half the night, most of which I'd never even heard of. Luckily a quick login to the super slow internet (no phone signal in venue) managed to blag them off iTunes and off we go.

When you speak to a client just before you start to discuss music.... Q) Would you like me to play any cheese? A), Definitely no, even if requested say you don't have any..... Okay, that's fine by me.

So, a few hours into the gig, the client comes up to me and asks for Macarana then Saturday Night. Apparently they are not cheese! :daft:

I would be interested to know what (as DJs) we class as cheese?

I'll be honest - I don't even ask that question any more.
Whilst I don't routinely play the action songs (Macarena, YMCA and the like unless asked), everything else is fair game.

To me, cheese includes the "classics" which actually fill our dance floors week in, week out...the likes of Livin' on a Prayer, Summer of 69, September, C'est La Vie, S-Club 7. Basically the stuff that's been tried and tested to fill my floor but which some think of as being overplayed.

I've said it before....everybody has their own ideas as to what 'cheese' is.
I used to ask the same question when I had my pre-gig meetings with the customer and I was surprised at some of the replies.
I can honestly say that the majority would always reply with "Please don't play the Birdie Song or Agadoo" (I think I've only played those 2 tracks less than a handful of times in 30 years).

As said already, the customer would come back with something like that, and then the likes of Macarena, Mambo No 5, Saturday Night etc would appear on their song request list.

I found that those who were into their 'proper' rock etc would see the likes of Busted as cheese.
Those that liked Hip Hop etc would see Will Smith etc as cheese and so on....

I had one guy approach me many moons ago at a wedding and ask if I had any Hip Hop. "Yes", I replied...."What are you after?".... He wanted me to play some Wu Tang Clan. I think the actual request was for Gravel Pit which I may well have played if I'd had an uncensored version, but I didn't so I was honest and told him that I couldn't play it due to the explicit lyrics and the number of kids in attendance. He was fine, and then he starting listing a whole load of bands and songs that he didn't think I had, or knew anything about. I knew who he was on about, and again....none of them were appropriate for the event. I ended up joking and saying "I'll chuck on House of Pain for you if you like".... He turned his nose up and walked off.

Later on I played 'Jump Around' and it packed the dance floor. All the kids were bouncing up and down too and enjoying themselves, yet Mr Hip Hop was sat at his table on his phone with his headphones on, no doubt listening to some 'proper' Hip Hop!

cheap vistaprint cards! :)

Have you seen the prices after they've added all the little extras like P&P, VAT, Reasonable delivery time (as opposed to a 2 week wait), Decent thickness card, Spot colour, Glazed finish, etc etc. they're certainly far from their cheap advertised £8.99 'headline' price :-)

.. You're in bed just dozing off having come down from a decent gig and... Your flipping van alarm starts going off. It takes a while for it to register because it's not a sound you've ever heard before now...

You grab the keys & run downstairs, open the back door then as you get onto the driveway you realise you're naked. Oh well.

So why did the alarm go off? The van was still locked, all windows & doors intact... A :Censored: moth!!

The venue is remote and the wedding ceremony will be sans-electricity (Maui 5 Go and iPad controlling everything)....so time to sit down and pre-mix an hours worth of music whilst the guests settle in when I should be in bed snoozing to be at my best

A guest with an overinflated sense of important demands the mic to announce to the crowd that she & the bride do a special dance to the track you're playing. You don't allow it but later when she feels the need to sing along to Proud Mary you again refuse, she gets the bride involved . You say the same to the bride. Bride goes away again without comment. Woman comes back again & tells you on no uncertain terms "you're gonna be :Censored: on TripAdvisor". Well miss, if you carried much weight with the bride surely you'd have been a bridesmaid? Meh.
