subs woofers/bass cabs

Hello i'm looking for a bit of advice regarding sub woofers/bass cabs. I've never owned a pair of these and was looking to get advice on what i should be looking for! my budget is 600-800 pounds. I currently use 800watt speakers (400w per channel) driven by a 1000watt(500w per channel) amplifier. Ideally i'm looking for advice on passive subs and anything else i should be considering. I understand I may need to upgrade my amp to 2000 watt (1000 per side) which(after selling existing amp) would push my budget up to 1000 pounds(max). I am not technically minded so please make your descriptions as simple as possible for me to grasp.

My amp is a Kam kxr1000 (1000w) 500w per side. my current speakers are behringer 1520eurolive 800watts (400w each). any help would be appreceated. :beer1:

So you got a huge choice.

Passive , active , one per side , 2+1 configuration.
I`ll leave the active side to those that know about these things....:D

Passive , some come with built in crossover , however for the most versatile system , a second amp and an active crossover , this way you have more control of the perceived volume of the tops and subs
, plus if a amp packs up , it is possible to run a basic system off one amp.
a tad more wiring , but nothing drastic.
a pair of class D cd15`s sound good for the money , built in crossover , so you can run these and your tops from one amp...:D.

sound is very personal , but with your budget , I`me sure you can get something that sounds great .

To be honest that rig even with an added sub would struggle at some if the larger wedding venues in Ireland. I've just sold a similar rig (Kxr100 and img speakers) that I had lying around for 500 euro and if I were you i'd do the same and get a pair of good actives tops (rcf, db tech, qsc) and an active bin. For example on adverts.ie at the moment there is a rcf 705as bass bin at 700, you could probably get it for 600. These are the dogs janglies and I know of at least two sets of rcf tops that could be bought for around 750 - 800. Seems within budget to me.

Right, first and foremost, don't sell the KAM amp. Buy an active crossover for around £50 and get a second amp as well. Run the tops from your existing amp, and the subs from the new one. This will give you full control of the sound, and backup if one amp should fail.

Alternatively, you could buy one or two active subs. This isn't as attractive a proposition in some ways, but it's easier in others.

Figures: The KAM 1000 you have is a good match for your tops, which are rated at 200w RMS. Ideally you'd be looking for subs giving around 500w RMS per channel The KAM KXR1300 would fit that description jsut fine, and all you need to do is find a pair of subs that sound nice, and fit your budget.

I'm not coming up with a lot of choice here, but basically you're looking for something around 500w RMS at 8 ohms with that amp. If you found something suitable, like the Peavey Prosub, which is usually 4 ohms, then the same size amp as you have for your tops is just fine.
Edit: Daryll types faster than me.:D You'll only find Class D subs s/h now, as I think they've ceased trading. I use them, and they're excellent.

Second edit: Have a look in the For Sale section. I think there are a couple of rigs in there at the moment. Shipping might be the problem.

I was using (until recently) 2xCD15's which are now surplus to requirements, they have a passive crossover fitted which will suit you perfectly until you get another amp and active crossover (I used to use these but have sold the amps and crossover recently).

Anyway, I can split the speakers I'm selling and offer the subs (plus adjustable poles & speakon leads) for £150 if you're interested.

They are 15" drivers and sound pretty damn good if I do say so myself. They are also very manageable to carry around.

If you want to keep your present speakers and just add passive subs I would suggest getting a Behringer Pro, often on eBay for around £40, which will give you output for full range with eq facility and a mono sub output. I use one myself.
I have a pair of Tannoy B475 18" subs, http://www.tannoy.com/products/260/b475%20Brochure.pdf and a TA1400 anplifier that I have been driving them with for £425.

The recommended crossover frequency ''Active: Recommended Points 70–240 HZ, 24dB/oct
Linkwitz-Riley (dependent on application)'' taken from spec sheet can be set as there is a control on the Behringer Pro for doing this.

The reasons I told CAM to go active is that is it so less complicated (and lighter) than what he needs to do to get a decent passive rig. He can use the tops for some gigs like in bars or smaller function rooms and bring out the sub for the bigger venues. My first system was nearly the exact same (kam kxr1500 and kam speakers) and then I upgraded to a passive Ohm system that sounded amazing but after 6 months of lifting two 20kg tops, two 40kg subs and a 40kg amp rack I had enough of it. Since I went active with QSC and RCF I havent missed it. If he can shift his current passive system for a decent price 4/500 euro it's a no-brainer in my opinion.
