Twitter, Twatter, Twotter - Help Please!:)

Ok so away from my DJing, as you may know I am a Marketing Manger for a Mercedes-Benz Van Dealership, and I have been tasked by the MD to launch a twitter account, get followers and interact with the world wide public.

So has any one got any experience in this Twitter thing?

I totally get the idea and concept of Twitter, I understand about tweeting and retweeting, DM's and Following.

I also get the requirement to make your own Tweets conversational and a good mix of salesy and interesting topics.

What I don't get or understand is how to actaully get followers :confused:. Do you just post a few relevant tweets and hope that some people follow you and go from there. This is where I really need help and would be grateful if anyone on the MDD can share their expertise.

I know this is non-disco related and hope that it is OK posting a request of this nature!

To start off, find 20/30 local people of interest to you. Don't follow any old tom,dick and harry. Then once you have done this use the "who to follow" feature to help find more people who are similar to the ones you are already following.

Use of hashtags is important as well so if your tweeting about a topic think of a buzzword that is related to what you are tweetings. For example if your talking about a goodyear tyre then #tyre or #goodyear would be useful. If you can find a couple of local social media experts to follow that would be useful to find out if there are any particular local hastags such as #Surreybiz maybe?

It'll take awhile, but stick with it. Spend half an hour each day for a couple of weeks working on it. Worthy investment of time.

I find once you have friends on there and you retweet tweets that they have sent from other businesses some of them start to follow you

Well other people will be looking for interesting people/companies to follow. However as I said if you use hashtags then people searching for that hashtag will see the tweet it was used with and bingo, you got a good chance that person will reply and follow.

As been mentioned, being retweeted is good but that will take time (naturally the more followers you have, the more chances of being retweeted).

There are some hashtags you can use to "just get more followers". Don't use it as its very unlikely you will have someone from your target market in such a vast group.
