Half decent set up comprise of No arguements about booths vs lightboxes but an idea as to how many lighting effects for a disco costing say the national average of £260???

this includes special effect lights as rope and uv within the cost and these are all part of a disco set up still in many peoples eyes?

Half decent... I would say, from putting mine against others I have seen:

1 set of bass bins (15"), 1 set of top speakers (12") with at least 1k through 'em...

DJ stand with lighting bar or a goalpost truss on stands with a couple of gobo / flowerspots, couple of scanners, 250w halogens not 50w.

CD decks and mixer into a graphic EQ / preamp if not built into the mixer, flightcased. UHF cordless mics - at least 2, or one cordless (for the client) plus a corded one for the DJ while the client has got the cordless one out...

Full PAT testing, £1 million PLI, basic PPL licence (for village halls / marquee weddings etc).

I only tend to put the rope up if it's an all dayer, gives a few lights while its still daylight without being overpowering e.g. afternoon wedding meal / speeches etc.

Well that's MHO...

Well it depends surely on who you are aiming for.. for the wedding sector then a good sound system backed up by a few nice lights is ok.. but for a nightclub style disco.. such as a rugby club then i would say effect lights need to be a bit better.. just my opinion

Thats up to you. After all this is a personal opinion thing. And this has been covered so many times, just with a different cover on the book!

How did you come up with that price as the national average, that's what I want to know! :teeth

It needs to look good and it shouldnt like it is a project where every bit of space has been taken up by lgihts.. just cos you keep adding them.

I dont think you should look at the cost element untill you get down to finding the right light.. it is about the effectivness firstly.

I think he means what the customer would expect for a fee of £260, not how much equipment you could buy for that!!! (at least i hope so)... oh, you've edited your post now!!! :omg:

Personally, i think a decent enough sound system that fills the venue (or dancefloor) without being pushed to distortion. As for lighting, well thats not as important.. but again its needs to cover the dancefloor and have some element of control so it suits the music.

Regarding the figure of £260, (which I thought was charges rather than costs) is this what everyone is getting on here for their average event? I must be living in the wrong area that's all I can say!

£260 is the figure that Mikeee Moore quoted as being the average night's fee for a DJ - apparently from a poll taken at PLASA 2003 (but I have no idea what that poll consisted of)

Seems suspicious to me (including inflation as well!) Do people charge that amount for say - an 18th birthday party, 100 people?

Danno13
05-10-2006, 03:24 PM
Yeah.. don't worry Alex, as PLASA is in London, i would imagine the higher rates that DJs charge there had quite an impact on that average.

And i'd quote £175 for an 18th with 100 people (actually, i did just that the other week.. haven't heard back yet though). Friday, i'm doing an 18th for £150 but that was booked earlier in the year.

True, but it is visited from people across the country though.

True.. but i'd imagine there would be a bigger proportion of London Djs.. if the same survey were to be taken at the DJ show North i imagine the average would be a lot lower...

I wouldn't take the results of that poll too seriously - I would imagine that the prices were exaggerated by some of the DJs.

Lol. Ego prices! Maybe the q was "how much do you think your worth, on average?"

We charge between £180 - £200 for an 18th with about 100-150 (tops)

Right even with the 2003 average price which may even be more its not the price Im thinking, of its what kind of lighting not sound would warrant this price. As I was asked buy an agent how many lights I had for a simular priced show of 13 light effects. I was quick to remind him that most of the time its the music & sound that counts, the look or lights of the show is 2ndry. Its about the entertainment of the night. But I was curious how much many thought they would take out for the price written as all lighting is an effect as such

cue the arguments about marketing yourself rather than your gear lolol....... i think about this every day and change my mind nearly as often..... if you drive a fiat punto then win the lottery 10 million quid will you buy the vauxhall astra because the salesman gave you a nice cup of tea and an upgrade to metallic paint for free or the lotus elise that looks pretty flippin awesome when tanking down the m1 at 120mph. once again there will be arguments the latter is made better performs better etc. but the bottom line is ........ you liked the look of it people are aesthetically pleased .

customer service is paramount in any industry and i personally the public in general have a very low opinion of ours the people that do it and the work that it involves .... i have had many occasions where on packing up / setting up clients have said " wow i had no idea so much time and effort went into making a disco happen"

and yes I have had clients book on the strength of the fact that i like to meet with them to make sure everything is set in stone and their dj is not just a faceless name on the day.

i really believe im worth between £180 - £300 depending on the function but the booking rate in the last few months since adding just 10 quid to prices quoted last year has plumitted.

sorry to answer the question i would say as a standard quality sound of 1k and 4 effects lights not including spotlights as they are just flashing lightbulbs ....... just my opinion please dont hurt me. but i would want a little more than that for 260 quid but maybe thats just me?

something with a bit more impact well round here anyway i know in london for that youd probably get a tape deck and a rope light but here where the average is quite low maybe due to fly by nights maybe due to just inexpensive quality entertainment but if i was quoted 260 id want to ask the question ok well bob down the road quoted me 120 what am i getting thats worth 140 quid more.......sadly jo public rarely gets that far in their questioning.

I know I might be a bit short of what some of you would call a decent show but currently the small show regularly takes (including lightboxes as an effect) 7/8 effects but the larger show will easily take between that and 9 and 12
