The terms "powered" and "active" have been used interchangeably in regard to loudspeaker designs, however, a differentiation may be made between the terms:[3]

In a passive loudspeaker system the low-level audio signal is first amplified by an external power amplifier before being sent to the loudspeaker where the signal is split by a passive crossover into the appropriate frequency ranges before being sent to the individual drivers. This design is common in home audio as well as professional concert audio.
A powered loudspeaker works the same way as a passive speaker but the power amplifier is built into the loudspeaker enclosure. This design is common in compact personal speakers such as those used to amplify portable digital music devices.
In a fully active loudspeaker system each driver has its own dedicated power amplifier. The low-level audio signal is first sent through an active crossover to split the audio signal into the appropriate frequency ranges before being sent to the power amplifiers and then on to the drivers. This design is commonly seen in studio monitors and professional concert audio.[4][5]
Hybrid active designs exist such as having three drivers powered by two internal amplifiers. In this case, an active 2-way crossover splits the audio signal, usually into low frequencies and mid-high frequencies. The low-frequency driver is driven by its own amplifier channel while the mid- and high-frequency drivers share an amplifier channel the output of which is split by a passive 2-way crossover.

Integrated active systems

A few observers use the term "active speakers" to refer to an integrated "active system"[6] in which passive loudspeakers are mated to an external system of multiple amplifiers fed by an active crossover. These active loudspeaker systems may be built for professional concert touring such as the pioneering JM-3 system designed in 1971 by Harry McCune Sound Service,[7] or they may be built for high-end home use such as various systems from Naim Audio and Linn Products.[8]

Active are easier to get a good sound.

Nah, bored with it all now http://planetsmilies.net/vicious-smiley-1763.gif (http://planetsmilies.net) & anyway with the above definitions what's to discuss?

Kind of like the laws of physics, you cannae change them :sj:

I thought this would be a chance to expand on 'not all unpowered speakers are passive' etc ? :D

FFS decide what application you need to put your speakers to and design a system around it. I have half passive and half active as it suits what I do. I can't afford a decent digital amplifier to drive bass properly, but can afford a good quality amplifier, which I love the sound that it produces, to drive the tops.

Its horses for courses depending on how many situations you are likely to find yourself in. I range from the two tops situation lots of DJS exist on to a FOH system consisting of two passive tops and two powered bass with 4 additional passive outriggers providing ambient sound. The passive route for tops makes sense for me as it allows me the flexibility to add cabs to exisiting amplifiers without issue (8OHM to 4OHM, when 2 cabs to 4) and as passives are cheaper my back up amp comes in to play to run outriggers whilst FOH amp runs FOH tops and bass looks after itself.

Work out what you do and sort your system flexbility to suit.

Neither.

Both active and passive systems can sound superb, and equally both can sound totally pants.

What sounds best is a system that is correctly set up and NOT OVERDRIVEN. If you routinely have to drive your system anywhere near maximum then you need a bigger system.

The key to a reliable and good sounding system is to have amplification ( either separate or integral) with more power than you need and speakers with sufficient power handling. Exercise restraint on the controls and dont thrash the living daylights out of it and you will have no problems.

I have to say the active Bose L1 amd 4 B1's that I use sound brilliant but the Tannoy System speakers I have are not quite so crystal in performance but far more powerful.
It just depends what speakers are needed for. I have never had an active system that can equal the belly shakin of the passives but the active subs give a beautiful tight sub bass.

I don't think anyone can honestly say which is better unless thay have the funds for exactly what they need because a big active system will probably sound great.

I use an all active system these days mainly due to curcunstances makign make choices at the time of sale. But I do miss the sound of my nice old peavey system. Could never pump out the power needed but the tone in those wooden cabs was so nice on the ear.

Agreed, overdriving is a big problem--even in big Night Clubs as I found out the other week.
