Saw this on another forum (not DJ related), and thought it would be a good idea to post it here...

Yup, good link. Also here http://reviews.ebay.co.uk/Fake-Shure-Mics-SM58s_W0QQugidZ10000000001865452 is a similar read.

I read both of these pieces of info after I had bought a switched SM58 from Ebay for £46! I thought it was a fake first of all, but then with all the info I've got from those two posts, it looks like mine is genuine after all.

Interesting as I saw this item when looking at Shure headset mikes--

Darren look away now :teeth:

What amused me was no one seemed to talk about SOUND QUALITY.

Shurely ( here we go ) the fakes wont sound as good as genuine?

Darren do you have another genuine Shure to compare on quality--and how do you know thats genuine? It Shure is complicated

Thats the acid test I think.

Never mind the labels!

I have to say Alan, that the sound quality was very good on the leaded mic. As discussed on another thread it was much louder than the radio mics too.

The only thing that made me even think that it was a fake to begin with, was the fact that the switch seemed a bit loose and was a different design to other Shure mics I've used and owned.

Before I bought it, I did have a good look on Google images for it and it did look exactly the same.

I might ring Shure in a minute and ask them what to look for etc.

Dolphin are fine Dragonfly - I've used them on a number of ocassions and they are a proper retailer rather than a drop shipper.

Thomann is a reputable and reliable dealer. Only concern that anyone has ever had is 'what if you need to send stuff back?'

Thats why if ( if ) I bought a Cortex I dont think I would buy from USA.

From what others have said, the PG58 is very similar to the SM58, but to be honest for less than £50 I would go with the SM58.

Tried and trusted.

I actually meant the difference in price between the 2 - but having said that I paid £46 for an SM58 from Ebay.

Why is the SM58 more expensive and considered a better mic and industry standard then?

Corabar Steve
05-10-2006, 08:07 PM
Coz you can sing into them with better results than PGs.

As most mobile DJs just use the mic for announcements then PGs are as good.

PG58 Vocal Microphone
A rugged microphone tuned to accentuate the clarity of lead and back-up vocals. Cardioid, Dynamic. (nothing about speech)

And SM58
It has a tailored vocal response for a sound which is a world standard for singing or speech (singing and speech)

So nerrrr!

You could say that about just about everything we use though Paul.

I for one, am very fussy about microphones (have you noticed? :teeth: ) and have always used the best for the application and that I can afford.

Now here's the thing.

If you have something for a long time and use it on a regular basis, then you stop noticing the difference.

If there is no noticeable difference, why the difference in the price, and why sell two different products?

Well, I have 2 UHFSM58s, a leaded SM58 and a BG3, so I'm going to buy one now on Ebay, so I can hear for myself.

And the personal opinion of thousands and thousands of others, which is why the SM58 is industry standard, so not quite, no.

A decent microphone will make most people sound good. One that isn't quite so good, will not.

Yes, you get a mic to suit your voice which is why I like the 58 - it suits my voice.
