View Full Version : How accessible are you?

I had an example Saturday at a personal level---that may give food for thought --or maybe not:daft:
So how easily can people contact you if they want to relatively quickly --as it happens I needed to get hold of a DJ quickly on Saturday at 2pm--due to an embarrassing let down.:o
After consulting Angela ( many thanks for your time Angela) I tried 3 sources.
One with a landline and no mobile offered.
One with only email contact:eek:
One with landline and no mobile contact ( however this one phoned back seconds later even though I did not leave a message to say could they help?)
The third business immediately solved my problem and they got a gig and
sorted my temporary problem.
The gig date was weeks away but I needed a quick answer.
I was not prepared to email or leave messages---I needed to speak to someone.
One out of 3 able to help quickly---well 2 out of four if we include Corabar:beer1: :beer1: :beer1:
My main phone has the mobile in the event of such emergencies.
If you are looking for business in a difficult year--do you need to sharpen up your act--or does it matter?
It mattered to me.
Just a thought:)

The problem is, Alan, with most DJs being one-man operations, no matter how many methods of contact you may have available, you're likely to fall short on a Saturday afternoon!

I pick up my landline voicemails by email - so anyone calling in an emergency out of hours would need to leave a message.
I do put my mobile number in my email signature so any clients would have that, but I would still screen calls when I'm not in "work mode" as I do try and have a life as well!
It does annoys me the amount of missed calls I see over a weekend that don't bother to leave a message!

It's very unusual that I'm able to answer a call to either my landline or my mobile first time, so I suppose I'm pretty inaccessible. However, the amount of enquiries I receive by telephone compared to email is so paltry that I don't see a great need to change...even if I could.

If I`m out and the landline goes then 9 times out of 10 the wife is at home, My site and clients have my mobile, Landline and email.

My landline is directed straight to my mobile and all calls answered on the mobile. I'm not a dj who sits in the house/office/spare bedroom all day, but understand people may need to receive an immediate reply.

Always answer my mobile 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and landline diverts to mobile when I am out.
One missed call could be a booking. :)

I have a life too and don't want to be contacted when I'm shopping or watching my son playing football etc Existing clients and venues have the mobile in case of emergencies and when we are busiest at Christmas, each venue has a list of DJs and their mobile numbers.
I am in my office 12 hours a day and after that people can leave a message or email. Let's not forget that lots of people have smart phones with email on these days so don't discount that.
Available via Landline or Mobile 24/7

We only advertise the office number, which is 9-6 Monday - Friday, after that and at weekends clients can redial the emergency number which the voicemail provides them with the number for.
Its made me much more chilled out not having the phones going in the evening and at weekends, we probably have lost disco work because of it, as its not our core market anymore though its not a huge deal!

im always on the end of the phone, and emails are forwarded to my mobile straight away.
to the dj's who say they are available 24/7,,, has anyone ever phoned with an enquiry at 2am? I've had that happen twice, both times the person sounded very drunk. I now switch off my mobile when i goto bed, and theres no phone in my bedroom to wake me if someone does ring.

All emails go to my mobile, so if emailed I'd know right away.
These days I have the answer machine on all the time and I screen the calls. With a toddler running about I'd rather wait till a quiet point when I can call back and give the call my full attention. It's not ideal and it's something I hate doing, but it's necessary for the time being.
I don't advertise my mobile number anywhere anymore. Only clients that have confirmed the booking get that number.

Not at all - once I finish in the office, people don't have my mobile and I don't answer the business phone. ;)

Emails are on 24/7.
Incoming calls are diverted after 7PM.
After a bad experience a good work/lifestyle balance is a must as is the ability to 'Turn Off'.

Do the people that have other employment answer the phone for disco customers when they should be doing something else then?

I agree with Angela that the majority of us are one man bands as such. I am very accessible and people can get hold of me at any time really (obviously I have limits etc), but 9 times out of 10, if someone were to need me in an emergency because they'd been let down last minute, I'd more than likely be unavailable because I would be working. Should I not be working, I count it as a night off and on a night off I may have a drink so if someone called me and I was free but I'd had a drink, I wouldn't be able to do anything anyway.
I've had 2 occasions over the years where I have had a call last minute and on both of those occasions I wasn't available but I called around and got someone else. It doesn't happen that often though.
EDIT - On the otherside though, someone like Darren who is a multi-op, I can see why he may not want to be bothered when he is doing stuff etc.

Landline does not forward to my mobile, but i will pretty much take calls anytime. Even at a disco, I try to ring a number back if I miss a call to.
Any friends in the business I tend to have their number saved to.

rightly or wrongly , my home phone is diverted to my mobile , which I carry around most of the time.
however , when I take my wife out , or when we are on holiday etc , the mobile is off , I put a high value on my private time.

I have my moble on me at all times. I have the 0800 number that can be diverted to a secont (dirt cheap) mobile, and I can pick my emails up on my phone. Its my choice when I switch them off/dont answer them, and its usually only if im working or doing something with the family.
What annoys me is the amount of people that ring looking for a disco at 8pm on a Saturday night...when your out working. They either dont leave a message, or when they do and you ring them back on Sunday....theyve found some one who was having a "night off"... ;)

Probably nothing lost there--but I admire your attitude.
Just found another communication problem here--bloke who was sposed to be fixing a Security Light to the Church here ( I am the contact ) turned up a week early--I will gloss over that---did not have a long enough drill to go through 3 feet thick Church walls so cleared off threatening to return yesterday--but no--nothing happened:eek:
Rang their Landline expecting an answer at 9am this morning--or a message giving a Mobile as I dont have all day to sit on my a... waiting for him to ring.
I hold the keys to the Building.
Ermm neither happened No answer--no mobile.
I need to speak to them NOW.
Not impressed.:(
A classic example of a badly run business not customer focussed.
Mind you he was cheaper than the normal people-- not my decision to go for the cheaper option I have to say.
We know a Disco story like that dont we children---

Yes I had to wait 9 months for my Roofer after he said--
I will be with you as soon as possible:daft: :daft: :daft:
As it happens he is a top tradesman and saved me hundreds and hundreds of pounds--well nearly a thousand --luckily I could wait.;)
Still havent heard from the :Censored: Electrician sitting here on my a...doing nothing obviously.

FYI, I work long hours in my office as
1. I hope to retire from DJing and just run the company.
2. I am currently marketing a new product.
I was thinking about letting you out of the sin bin the other day, but with trolling comments like that, you can stay in. :)

Youre slogan is 'work smarter not harder' so i though it odd you were working 12 hour shifts.
Not trolling at all, in actual fact you regularly pull people up for saying one thing then doing another.

Have you ever wondered why you have been in the Sin Bin as long as you have? Maybe a time for quiet reflection.

If you don't respect him why post in reply to him? Surely it's better to just not make any posts directed to Darren? You by your own admittance have no respect for him, therefore I can only deduce that you are posting to entice a negative reaction. By definition...trolling (in my opinion).
If you wish to discuss and reply to this please do so via the Sin Bin area. This thread has been derailed enough.
