No, not the track by Little River Band. More the random firing of the few remaining neurones in an old bloke's brain.
So here we have the first ( and possibly last ) in a sporadic series, by an Old Git, who sometimes gets prompted by events to remember things from days gone by. Mr Neen’s radio show was the catalyst for this.
Once upon a time, I used to cover some gigs for a mate in York. It was a huge venue, and our 70watt amp and FAL column speakers were stretched to the limit there. It was a big place, and regular readers will have twigged how long ago, by the use of phrases like “two speakers” and “70 watts “. ;) The crowd were pretty loyal to the gig, and we would see many familiar faces at each one, and receive many regular requests.
In those days, there was no downloading with WiFi, oh no. :( It was a trip to the record shop, Sound Effect, in King’s Square, if I remember correctly. What we didn’t have one week, we had to have next week.
The punters were a varied lot, and we had a bunch of folk who loved Punk. Once upon a time, I had a fair chunk of what Adam Ant put out on 7” vinyl. Kick, and Car Trouble are two which spring to mind. We played a load of that sort of thing.
Then, the stuff that Andy’s show reminded me of. Northern Soul. Dean Parrish-I’m on my way, Judy Street-What, Jimmy Radcliffe-Long after tonight is all over, Tobi Legend-Time will pass you by, and Wigan’s Chosen Few- Footsee were all regularly on the turntables.
The one which had the most surprising effect though, was the first time I played a record which suddenly stopped everyone shuffling their feet, and as one person, three hundred folk sat down.   Then they started rowing.;) ;) You’ve guessed it, Oops up side your head. First time that happens, you tend to remember it. :D :D
That’ll do for now, over to any of you for your memories of “The Good Old Days”, even if it was only last year.
