Baffled. Email problem.

Twice recently I've had emails telling me that mail could not be delivered during a four hour period, the first one was all to aol addresses with vaguely disco related sounding names. Thing is, I didn't try to send any to these addresses. The second one is to BTintenet and Yahoo names.

I'm baffled. Thoughts anyone? :confused: :confused:

I have just had the same problem! On Saturday morning, and on Sunday morning, when i went to open my emails, I received the same message "could not be delivered during a four hour period" they both showed lots of email addresses, mostly disco or dj related, although I didn't recognise them.:confused:

It did cause me a bit of worry yesterday morning. But if it is happening to someone else, that is ok! (if you know what I mean!) :)

Spammer / hacker tactic.

Everyone's cottoned on to 'account suspended', 'tax rebate', 'dead Nigerian relative', 'verify your contact details', 'free pills' and whatever else :BS: they pump out in the hope that very occasionally some numpty clicks on the embedded link or replies to the embedded email address.

Gmail is very good at junking these by default.

I was notified yesterday by Darren and Angela of this and have spent a while looking to see if it was this site that has been possibly hacked.

I am pleased to say that after investigation it seems that we have not been hacked.

I have been sent some of the offending emails and have cross referenced them with email addresses that have been stored in both our forum and directory.

Only a small fraction of the DJ related email addresses are on this site. I have also looked at server logs and have seen nothing out of the ordinary.

It looks to me that the email addresses obtained were gotten from a .txt file.

There are a number of DJ related sites out there where you may have signed up, it may be worth contacting them all and mention what has happened.

We will keep tabs on this and if anything crops up that may affect us, we will investigate further.

Just one thing to be wary of when you are receiving these undeliverables....

at work we used to bounce email sent to non existant email addresses on our domain, now we just dump it.

BT & Yahoo share an email infrastructure. We were getting spam emails from fake BT and Yahoo email addresses and sending back undeliverable messages. BT/Yahoo saw the large volume of undeliverables we were sending to non existant accounts on their mail servers and labelled us a a spammer and blocked us from sending to any btinternet.com, btopenworld.com, bt.com, yahoo.com and yahoo.co.uk email addresses.

Took ages to get our domain unblocked again :(

The mailservers sending you the undeliverables may decide that your spoofed address is spamming them and block it accordingly. If you find that you cant send genuine emails to people on those domains then that may well be the cause.

Does anybody use different email addresses on different sites?

From checking the source of the message, the ones we are receiving are purporting to come from 2 different email addresses of ours - both ones that Steve uses, but none from the email addresses that I use.

That narrows down where the email addresses have been harvested from, but not sufficiently so to categorically pinpoint where (although there is one extremely likely suspect rearing it's head from this, but I don't want to name because I cannot say for definite.)

Can anyone else narrow it down further?

One trick that some friends use is to have disposable email addresses for non important stuff keeping <realname>@my.domain for trusted contacts.

e.g. this month would be keith0312, next month keith0412 etc which is easy if you have your own domain because anything is available :)

They also use retailers names when they have to register on websites eg [email protected] or [email protected] then when they recieve spam to those addresses they know who has sold their contact details on.

Many moons ago I order some components from a company and they put Voxby on the invoice instead of Doxey. Two weeks later I started receiving junk mail from several companies addressed to Mr Voxby. Needless to say I have not dealt with that company since.

I keep a domain specifically for this purpose. When dealing with anybody online, I always use a 'disposable' address - for example [email protected], [email protected].

Then I can immediately jump on any company using my address without permission or selling it on against my wishes.

I refuse to deal with companies that don't give the opt-out option.

I always have the option then of silently binning the incoming messages if the company doesn't play ball.

...and I'm hoping that someone who's had these emails will have done the same so that we can pin point where they're coming from and give the company the 'heads up', because I'm sure that this isn't a case of someone having sold the list, but rather them being the victim of a hacker (or whatever the correct term for this may be)!

Sifting through my junk folders I've had lots of these types of emails going back several months, but no sudden rash and none through traceable accounts :(
