Musician's Union

Does anybody else subscribe to the Musician’s Union? Just thought I’d give them a plug here as I think they are fantastic value for money and give good solid advice on lots of info such as tax, contracts, plus you get personal advice etc should you need it. I subscribe as a new member for £4.50 a month. This includes £10m PLI, and £1000 free gear insurance (which is upgradable if you need to insure specific items)

Although they are not specifically out there for DJ's I have had some great help so far!

And no..I’m not on the board! Did I mention the free diary and promotional items?

They are not the most popular organisation amongst DJs at the moment, since despite having many DJs as members, they have been..... how shall we say..... less than helpful in sorting out the licencing situation with PPL & MCPS.

Ah. I was unaware of this. I do apologise. I know they are a bit up sore on these issues shall I say, but for other things they are very helpful.

Even though they havent been helpful in the dj license issues, I am too a member of the MU as the PLI cover is fantastic..

Plus, they are a union after all so you have got backing for legal issues etc.

Although I pay £29 a quarter to be a member......

I forgot to mention-the rate you pay depends how much you earn. Not very expensive though compared to other schemes, especially with all the extra advice on hand.

I did mention something about backing us DJs in the fight for a fair licensing scheme..

Afraid as much as Id like to join them It aint worth it till the back down with there them and us stance like were not good enough. Even though we constantly advertise there artists???? and yep with the lack of enthusiasm in regards to the DJ Licence they stitched us up good and propper over it first time, hence we are fighting for a better one

Jup I am a member £9.90 a month I think great insurance cover etc very helpful.

Take your point about the issuses mentioned.

I also think it's weird that they take on D.J's but they do and help and advise.

With the liecence I think the artist will come in front of us all the time which will alway's be an issue rightly or wrongly that is something we have to put up with,
unless all dj's dont use there insurance and that will not happen.

I did fill in the questioneer and was told that it did make interesting reading and that the membership of dj's was on the up now and required help. It could mean that might just might have our own section, thats what they are looking at as I understand it. Lets just wait and see. cos that might be a very good strong bow to our case. or back in the dark again.


So to some up there's no answer on that subject just a stalemate situation.

I was thinking that - the DJ's Union. What a great idea! Corabar?

The reason I get it for so little is that I've been DJing for less than a year, I am under 21 and make less than whatever it is you have to make to pay more!

Yes I have to agree if we had our own set up.

The BIG but is of course who is going to admin it, keep it on the straight and narrow etc.

But have to repeat it is a great idea.
