I kid you not, this happened to me.

The phone goes, it's a customer enquiring about a wedding.

After my usual pre-amble (after which I know the date, the venue, the times required and where she got my number from) the million dollar question gets asked, how much will it cost.

When I told her a price she asked why it was so expensive, so I did my usual explanation of experience, equipment, PAT/PLI, NADJ member, etc etc etc.

Her reply left me lost for words, and I quote..........

"Well this is actually my second wedding, so could you not be so good and do it cheaper? It doesn't have to be brilliant, it's not like it's my first wedding"

That was the end of the enquiry, but (just for fun) I did think about it afterwards......

If I don't bring any back-up gear and I'm doing it on a wing and a prayer I'll knock £50 off

If I forget all I've learned since DJing and totally play all the wrong music I'll knock £100 off

If if only bring a couple of lights, and cheap ones at that I'll knock £35 off

If I bring a laptop full of illegally downloaded tracks, cheap speakers that sound awful, be totally incoherrent on the microphone and play every track at full volume (including the background music) then I'll do the whole event for £60 and you can even call me Sid!

Anyone else ever had that asked of them?

I disagree. It is and always has been the main driver for a lot of people, sure, but I have it from the mouths of many horses that less than 10% of wedding couples consider price as their main selection criterion.

For non-wedding events it's 22%.

That's from a very large very recent sample UK-wide.

I've had the same kind of comment but not to do with a price reduction on a booking.

It's a comment that has come from the Birthday 'Boy' a few weeks back when I did a 50th Birthday party that had a great playlist of 80's and Ska etc. Seeing a bunch of 'older' blokes all trying to skank to the likes of Madness, The Specials etc was great but a number of them couldn't hack the pace and the birthday 'boy' came over and said words to the effect of "Can you play something crap now for the ladies as we're all knackered but I'm not complaining".
