Just wondering what other people would do.

If you hired another Dj to cover a job/s for you and they couldn't afford the travel costs would you:-

A: Pay the travel costs and pay the Dj the full amount and take it on the chin ?

B: Pay the Dj the full amount and claim it back on Business Expenditure ?

C: Pay the Dj the full amount minus the travel costs ?

Please explain below and before anyone ask's NO i haven't done this i was wondering.

So please no bickering or going off topic just plainly A,B or C and a quick explanation.

Many thanks.

Why would someone take a booking if they couldn't afford the travel costs? It doesn't make sense. If you take a booking , you factor the travel cost into the price when you accept it surely?

Basically if you had a booking at a set price and wanted someone to cover it but that person was unable to pay the travel costs is basically what i meant.

hope that helps :o

Then they shouldn't take the booking or should negotiate a higher fee!

As i say if you handed a booking to another Dj but the price was sorted 100% and you couldn't do anything about the price and the Dj didn't have the cash to travel would you A,B or C lol

Also you and the Dj had sorted a price out etc and you both agreed the set price eg:£300 per gig

So say they did 3 gigs at £300 = £900

Would you then pay them the full £900 and take the travel costs on the chin or pay the Dj £900 (for the 3 gigs) and pay the travel costs and claim the travel costs back OR pay the Dj eg: £840 and say the reason they haven't got the full amount is due to you paying there travel costs

What would you do is what i was basically getting at mate.

*All prices are examples*

When I give a booking to one of my DJs, they accept the booking if they think it's worth it. I don't really see how someone can be in business, take on a booking and not afford to get there.

If you accept a booking from someone else, the expenses are your problem not the person you took the booking from.

To be honest, I wouldn't be booking a DJ who couldn't pay for fuel to get to a gig. I'd want someone reliable.

Ok thats understandable :)

What would you do IF you HAD booked the Dj tho but the Dj had explained about no travel costs and you accepted it and offered to pay for the costs ?

Sorry to drag it out a make a moutain out of a mole hill

Basically you had booked the Dj he did the jobs for you and you knew about the travel costs issue but nothing more was said untill you went to pay the Dj ?

What would you do

I know its weird one and without saying well you wouldn't have booked them etc etc lol

If a DJ came to me after they had agreed to do a job pleading poverty, I would make it clear to them that they have already entered into a contract, and that if they did not fulfill it, they would definitely end up in even greater poverty!
If for some reason I had agreed to pay for their travel (can't see why this might happen, unless it was Christmas and I was feeling very generous) I would then re-claim the travel costs I had paid, from the fee. Seems quite straightforward, and the sensible thing to do! This is due to me running a business, not a charity for waifs and strays. I would also make sure that he didn't get offered any further work!

Whichever option applies must surely depend on the agreement between the two parties. Your scenario suggests a lack of communication, or poor explanation of the contract.

Surely if both parties were open and upfront about the situation, then that wouldn't happen?

Getting to the gig is the DJ's responsibility. No one else's.

Even tho nothing was mentioned and the Dj was told "We will claim it back as a vat/business expentidure and wasn't told nothing till you had payed them ?

But when questioned got the message who are we meant to claim it back from even tho a set price between you and the Dj had been sorted ? also would you ask the Dj to send a you a invoice for the amount MINUS the travel costs as so the company they are invoiceing doesn't know about the travel costs ?

Also the Dj wasn't pleading poverty they paid for there first travel costs but it was the second costs and retun that was a unfortunatnate time but got told "no worries we will cover that"

The Dj knew nothing about the expence being took out and only questioned once the balance had been paid to them minus the travel ?

Would you do that as i see it as lieing and theft as both parties had agreed on a price nothing was said about travel costs and then get told send me a invoice for the gig MINUS the travel costs :/

Your adding more info as your going along now Dave, make your mind up.

If your quoted a fee for a job, you incur the travel costs. Simple as.

You said in your first post " NO i haven't done this i was wondering." Yet you now seem to be delving into the realms of specifics! So HAVE you done this, and if not, why have you got such a detailed scenario in mind?

No worries i can see that i took a company on a good basis and got told basiscally not to worrie about the travel but then got ripped off and before anyone wants to begin the slateing war

I was told a price i did explain that i couldn't afford the travel costs to which i got told "we will sort it"

Anyway its obvious you live by your mistakes and trust me i shall no longer deal with this company EVER again as they are full of lies

Got told they would claim the travel back via putting it through the business

I have all the messages saved so if anyone wants proof feel free but as i say i have been done by this company once and i wont be doing it again with a long shot no matter what they say

Act in haste repent at leisure

In the situation described, and if I had to pay their travel costs, I'd definitely be deducting it from their fee, no question about it. It's the workers responsibility to ensure they get to the gig. If they can't make the gig they shouldn't be accepting work.

And if a DJ told me that they couldn't get to the job they'd lose all the gigs and associated revenue anyway. I'd find somebody else that I could rely on to get to the job. Simple.

I totally agree. I wouldn't expect my employer to pay for travel to and from my day job. It's my responsibility to get to and from the place of work.

My gig on a Friday I sub from someone else. I have a bus pass for the day job so I use to get to my gig by bus (about 10 mins away). I then get paid on the night out of which I pay for a taxi home (taxi fee was negotiated in to my fee before I took the booking on). Simples!

If I do work for this guy further afield, then he often provides a lift in his van but this could mean having to leave home at daft o'clock in the afternoon and getting home at even dafter o'clock in the morning as he picks up other DJs, sets up kit on the way and collects it on the way back. So, if the booking is not too far away it makes a lot more sense to make my own way there and back.

As I mentioned earlier, if I were in the same situation I would be deducting your travelling expenses too. I can't see what the issue is, and if it were me that had deducted the travel fee, and if I were to log onto a forum to see a thread like this about the situation, well, let's just say I wouldn't be best pleased. The whole thread and your grievance just seems utterly ridiculous to me. Sorry, just my opinion Dave.

No rules broken. In fact one of our moderators posted a thread (http://www.forum.mobilediscodirectory.co.uk/showthread.php?p=596681) last night along the same lines. It was about a DJ that has ripped him off by not paying him the money owed from a purchase. And I hear the same member in question also has had his website(s?) cut off for non payment of hosting. So far no names have been mentioned by Paul (and rightly so), but I would hope that it wasn't one of our members that was involved.

I see no reason for closing any of these threads at the moment. No names have been mentioned in any of them, and both were posted asking for opinions only. However, posting inviting people to PM or call you discuss this could be opening yourself up to potential slander and libel issues. My advice is to tread carefully.

I don't understand how you can be running a "business" yet not have the cashflow in place to put diesel in the van to get to a gig. I know times are tuff, but really?

Unless of course the gig is in another country and it's a case of paying for flights, etc. But even then, i would imagine most business' have either enough cash flow to front the money; or the means to borrow it from their bank in some form.

Dave doesn't drive so he has to rely on mini buses like me to get about. He was obviously promised the fee for DJ'ing + travel expenses to make it his worthwhile, otherwise, he'd me DJ'ing just to pay the taxi driver.

The company haven't coughed up (as promised) so Dave wants to know how to approach the matter and what to do next.

Am I right Dave?

DeckstarDeluxe
03-04-2012, 05:02 PM
But the fact Dave doesn't drive is his issue, not the company who employed his services. If the fee offered wasn't enough for him to consider it worthwhile after getting there and back then he should of declined it.

As other people have said if someone tried to claim expenses like this off me it would be the last job they did. I don't mind buying a roadie a happy meal as a little tip but it ends there.

Charlie Brown

But Dave confirmed with the agency before accepting the gig that they would cover his travelling expenses. If they've made a commitment/promise, then they should stick by it IMO.

Dave probably wouldn't have accepted the gig otherwise.

If thats the case it all now makes sense.

I was working off Charlies post 31 as he seemed to know all about it, which was pretty good as the rest of it was very confusing.

He says it was a broken promise.

Seemed easier than reading all the previously confusing posts written in conflicting language---ie. it appeared to be talking about someone elses problem when in fact it wasnt.

Probably best I go and lie down in a dark room now and forget all about it.:daft:
