Southampton Hotel

Can anyone from this end suggest a decent hotel for myself next week? Probably looking into it too much but some of the trip adviser reviews are scaring me.

How long are you staying for? Surely anything cheap and cheerful will do for a day or so?

You're right, but after some research (probably a bit too much) it would be cheaper for me to stay in a Hilton than it would Premier Inn!

Somewhere that's near the cruise docks, has got a local boozer for a couple of fosters and preferably wifi in the bedroom.

there are three nearest the docks
first one being a Holiday Inn, opposite that is the Grand de Vere, then a little up the road you have a brand new Premier Inn right next to Carnival Uk headquarters.
Most of these are not very far from central town so beer choice is not very limited and I would expect any of these to have wifi.
I would say go with the Premier Inn as its only been there about a year so room standards should be adequete.

Further up the road you have a Novotel and an etap right next to each other, and on the same business estate as the nearest Mcdonalds

the etap is basically a box to rent for the night and the Novotel are a bit too up themselves imo (won't let any DJ in there except there own contracted one)

i think if you look at any trip advisor there will be horror stories on any hotel anywhere but you take a chance really and if you don't like what you get then complain there in person not on a cpu afterwards

I haven't done cruise work before but the new carnival hq is pretty hard to miss, its big and white and they uplight the huge wall at night which is quite nice as its a rough cut texture not plain and flat. plus it's pretty much right next to the biggest most yellow building in the south...........IKEA!

Jurys inn would be the best bet as its right next to Bedford Place and quite near the docks. Easy to find too.

Thats Lynhurst the main town and council building. It starts just after Totton (IMO) which is 10 mins.

Edit - I guess if you're coming from a different side you'd go over the bridge, I can't really remember the layout. I'm thinking of the part where you board the ships.

The tide goes out and there is a road that goes across from Hythe to Southampton - its the only port in the world that has a double tide (2 a day).

The information Spyke gave you is totally accurate. I can't really think of anything to add.

Some of the information Toby gave you is relevant - Jury's would put you nearer the clubbing part of town but you would probably want to drive to Carnival House which wouldn't be the case if you stayed at one of the hotels Spyke mentioned.

I'd respectfully suggest (being a grumpy old man) that if you are serious about this possible opportunity that you focus on the interview procedure and don't go near a bar or club until it's over. Good luck.

Checked in at the Grand Harbour. Bit too OTT for me, they insisted on carrying my Sainsbury's carrier bag (with a crumpled up shirt and clean underwear in) and my laptop to the room.

Got there to discover two single beds, quick phone call to reception and they were up in 5 minutes.

Then I realised my internet wasn't working, another call to reception (they hate me now) and someone popped up. They couldn't fix it so I've been moved to a different with a sea view, not much to see really.

Anybody know a nice restaurant nearby? I don't fancy paying £17.50 for a cheese burger. Ta. :beer1:

If you haven't already found somewhere then consider the following:
1 - if you like a bit of steak try Buffalo Bills opposite the Mayflower theatre, bit of a trek but a nice steak house if not a little bit on the pricey side
2, just down in ocean village is a weatherspoons called the Sir Admiral Lucious Curtis, cheap and cheerful except the staff
3, again in ocean village but a bit further up you have 2 nice establishments banana wharf and the pitcher and piano, both quite upmarket contempoary food establishments
4, there is an all you can eat chinese around but the name eludes me now
5, lastly Mcdonalds

enjoy your choice and enjoy your stay, I,m around ocean village tomorrow so if you see rather miffed looking spikey haired fellow then just shout Oi Spyke and come and say hello

ha, must say I didn't realise about the crusie shio thing at first and only mentioned carnival hq because it is quite a recognisable landmark. Glad it went well hope you get some good news, being away for the first time on your own can be quite nerve racking even for the more experienced among us, we all had to do it once ya know, first time I went somewhere on my own was to drive 100 miles to meet a girl I didn't even know after chatting on the internet, that was scary but on the plus side we are still together and have 2 beautiful children together, anyway it is a scary world out there especially here in Southampton when just this weekend two people have been burned to death!

I'm really tempted to do the two months, see how I get on, come back home for my Xmas residency and then go again next year.

I really can't decide and they want an answer today :(

Sounds like a fantastic experience for someone of your age. 2 months will absolutely fly by, but offer you invaluable experience to determine if this is the way to go or not, plus...you can't really be anywhere but at home for Christmas, as far as I'm concerned!

So the Canada run includes a stop in NYC!? awwww, that sounds amazing. I love New York, got married there, and New England, NYC area in the Autumn is truly beautiful.

Add to that stopping at places like Cadiz, Istanbul, Boston, Athens etc.


What an experience. If I didn't have the wife, kids, mortgage and full time job I'd be all over that! :D

A two-month stint would give you the opportunity to try it out without having to be away for a very long time, Charlie. Sounds perfect!

If you took the 6-month stint and hated it after a week, you'd feel terrible, but with a shorter cruise, you could just grin and bear it knowing that you'd be getting to see all these great places and be home in the not too distant future.
