It's sad to see this scam still going on. One of the worst offenders would ring and say they were Microsoft employees which would add some weight to the scam. The said thing is, they were an official MS partner. This was brought to MS's attention some time ago but they were very slow to act. Now lots of people know about the scam and there are more and more scammers doing it. :(

Has anyone had an email from TalkTalk? They're cutting off my service, because I changed my secure code on some payment system. I don't think that I'll be too inconvenienced, since TalkTalk don't provide me with anything, and I don't have any contracts with them.

I suspect a ( fairly well crafted ) scam.

Yes, I got it and need to change my 3-D password.

Your account details have been changed.
We noticed that you recently changed the 3-D Secure Password (Verified By Visa or MasterCard SecureCode) you use to pay your TalkTalk bill, you are the rightful holder of the TalkTalk account and you must verify your account!

Both my nattwest and halifax bank accounts have been compromised again this week and i must change my details..... Again i don't have accounts with either... how do people fall for this?

Although barclays being so poor i was in america a few years back and they called to say my account had been blocked due to suspected fraud. I said thanks for letting me know and could you please reactivate my card. I was told we have cancelled it and another is on its way to you know, i pointed out i was in america and asked how i was going to by a plane ticket home to collect the new card when they had cancelled the one i had... Needless to say they now check before they cancel like sensible people.

It had turned out my local shell garage had been the culprit and an employee had brought a nice holiday to barbados on me! all i did was fill up with fuel!

I got this, this morning and for a moment I was slightly confused because I used to be with Talk Talk until about 6 months ago.

Then I thought.
1. My 3 digit code has not changed.
2. If your still taking money and I haven't noticed, I damn sure don't want to pay you anymore!

It was early though!

Looks like this one is doing the rounds again, just had a phone call from a gentleman with an Indian accent saying he was from Microsoft approved company and my computer had severe problems and spyware on it.
I played along for a while and asked him for a phone number so I could ring him back when I had more time, funny at this point the phone went dead..Hmmmmmm ;)

People fall for it because it's a game of numbers. These scammers use armies of spambots (innocent folk's computers that have been compromised and turned in to spam-churning "zombies" - most people don't even realise but just wonder why their machine suddenly started working sluggishly!) to send millions of spam emails. If only 1% of recipients click the link then they've made money. If you send out 10 million emails, it's a safe bet that some of those will hit Lloyds, NatWest or (as is usually the case with the emails I get) HSBC customers. And some of those may not be internet-security aware so click the link/enter their password/enter their card details.

Microsoft are well aware of these scams and are finally taking steps to educate people:

I've just checked my email and found that I, too, have this scam/spam email sitting waiting for me. I'm not a TalkTalk customer so I wouldn't have fallen for it but it is a new one on me and does look pretty convincing. However, a couple of points gave it away. The links actually lead to "www.buy-canon.com" which should set alarm bells ringing straight away. Another, more subtle thing I spotted was the use of an exlamation mark in the sentence "you must verify your account!". I don't think a professional company with proper copy-writers would have included an "!" in a serious email like this.

I've done a quick check of the web and, apparently, this scam has been around since at least the start of the year:

http://www.hoax-slayer.com/talk-talk-phishing-scam.shtml

What does set alarm bells ringing for me is that it would seem a lot of forum members have received this email today. Have our email addresses been harvested from the forum, I wonder? I've checked the message source code and can't find any obvious senders details but it does suggest the email may have originated in South America (Columbia, to be more precise!).

Oh, well. Send it to the trash!!
