New sound system options

Hi guys looking for some opinions on a new sound system.
I have used various systems over the years mostly large pa systems for large events such as d&b, Nexo, EAW, Turbosound, EV line arrays, so am looking for something fairly decent

I currently own a 2x Shermann cubs (12inch) tops
2x Skytec subs ( they work and kick some bass at and £15 per cab when in got them they were ok.

I don't really want to get rid of the shermanns but they weight a ton and would like a powered system. Options i have looked at are

2x mackie SRM450 v2 & 2x mackie srm1801 subs
or
2x RCF art 312 or 412 with 2x RCF 705a subs
or a mixture of the above RCF tops, mackie subs
or finally a JBL eon rig say the 515xt with 518 subs.

What are peoples views and opinions on these rigs I have about £2000-£3000 to spend.

I use RCF: 2x 312A's and 2x 705AS and cannot fault them.

I've done a side by side comparison with a mates Mackie rig, 450s and 1801, and we decided that the RCF was clearer and had a more rounded sound at higher volumes...so much so that he flogged his and now runs RCF.

As has been said before, sound is subjective, so best to find somewhere to have a listen.

I really would not go for Mackie! RCF are ok but I myself have been looking at all major brands of speakers, I've travelled to wembley, london, essex, Doncaster and more to listen to them and the QSC kw122 and QSC kw181 came out champ!

PS: HK are also ok!

Matthew, listening to speakers in a shop is not really getting an idea what they sound like. You need to use them for different applications in different venues over a period of time to get the true idea of sound.

Yes I know, these speakers in the last post I have all heard at venus apart from kw122 but I have heard k12 and they still win :lol: there not the loudest speakers but you add more speakers at bigger venus.

£2000 to £3000 would get you an excellent nexo PS/LS sub system (2nd hand mind you). Although not powered, it doesnt take up much space and provides one hell of a thump and clarity, leagues above mackie, rcf etc.

2 x Tannoy B475 18" theatre quality subs
2 x Tannoy T40 15" subs originally 300w rms but reloaded with 600w rms
2 x Tannoy V15 15" dual concentric 400w rms drivers

I will also include a couple of speaker poles though when used in a stack they are very very good. Selling for £1600.

As you are in Watford it is not far from me in Norwich and you can have the above system for £1200.

Chrisj - Thank you for the offer of your system at that price. Several reasons for wanting a new system are portability, size and storage. With a powered system I have no need to carry amps etc. Quite often I use my car to transport stuff I hope you find a new home for your system.

Javlingames - I love the Nexo PS rigs although I dont generally need anything that size for a disco. If I do then I have a few local hire companies I know who stock Nexo or similar.

What I am looking for is people views and opinions on powered speaker systems they have used. thanks for the reply's so far.

If you apply a few criteria then a short list naturally creates itself.
please fill in the following and leave blank any you where you have no preference and feel free to add to the list as well if you have further criteria.

Type of music
Wood or plastic

The more you can answer the more you'll narrow down your options.
I'd guess in reality, and keeping to known, quality makes and spending all or near your budget you actually only have 3 or 4 likely options - any of which would do the job extremely well Then it's just a matter of concentrating your efforts in getting to hear them.

well i have the ev elx 112p and the 118p active subs and they are fantastic sub is really lite for its size and the tops are crisp

I feel it is essential that new members know just how much experience the people giving them "advice" actually have. You don't have that much, yet you're coming across like somebody with years & years of full time experience. Which is why I asked the (as yet unanswered) question that I did, which was by the way, in no way rude. It was a straightforward question asked in a straightforward way.

By the way have you put anything about being a 15 year old boy on your Melt Music DJ website yet?

Now, I am aware that you are reluctant to answer questions that do show up your inexperience, so I won't hold my breath while waiting for a reply, but at least the person asking the initial question now knows to take your advice with a pinch of salt with regard to how much experience you have.

In the past we have not tolerated inexperienced members giving advice as gospel truth when it is clear that they don't have sufficient experience to know what they are talking about & we're not about to start.

I am also looking at a new PA (going from passive to active ) I appreciate I need to go and listen for myself to various makes and combinations which I intend to do but has anybody had or got any experience with the LD systems stinger 12A and stinger sub15A or LDE122A and Sub15A

Not sure I agree totally with Steve's post slating melt music because of his age and "alleged" lack of knowledge.

I find these days that there are a lot of teens who are REALLY into sound in a big way and have a wealth of knowledge that far surpasses most people almost hitting their 50's. Sure, experience accounts for a lot but you forget, these kids spend hours and hours tinkering and learning, getting involved with theatre's and so on we can't really slag them off because we feel "threatened" by the knowledge they do have.

Back on topic..Ive just paid for a pair of rcf 312s last night from the bule aran- jam club cost me £714.02 for the pair including delivery.

Right an update on what I have been looking at and am getting/ doing.
As much as I love the RCF speakers, I love my Shermann cub 400's more. I have decided to get the cubs re arpeted and tidyed up and to purchase some new subs from Shermann as well. I am also going to upgrade my amps to Yamaha p7000's.

If you have not heard of Shermann have a look they are British built using high quality parts from europe not from China. I might invest in a few months time in some LD Stinger active 8's form conference and speeches as they are pretty tidy and look the part. Any Thoughts.....

Ken at Shermann recommended them to me. He even said that the inbuilt crossover would be fine as well.

They do. I use P5000s as my main amps.

I can't understand why more DJs don't use them.

I guess because they are heavy and you can get a powered cab for not much heavier. I would idealy love some FFA amps. Cant wait to get my new subs from shermann and my old cabs redone up by them as well. Ok they will all be carpet due to the tops being orginally carpet.

I don't think they are that heavy. Most of our other amps are as heavy if not heavier. Although I suppose 26kg is heavy compared to some.

I now run a Shermann rig powered by Chameleon amps i have to agree having used most pas going for the bigger jobs i do they are awesome.
The Shermann cubs are a great sounding speakers well made solid with quality components in them.
I use hz speakers for upstairs jobs and where the room doesnt require such a big sound again great sounding cabs with quality components.

ffa amps dont have the grunt to power your Shermann subs Chameleon do it so much better.
