UPS - Who uses one?

Not something I'm immediately looking at, but it's somewhere on my 'to do' list (and has been for some time!), but I don't know much about them, and what size is required, etc.

So, who uses one? What size is it? What one do you use? Would you recommend it?

I have 3 x APC ES Series BE550
1 in the house and 1 for each of my rigs.
I use them just for an ext. HDD when DJing.
Not really needed for anything else.
They are ideal..... I have used a Belkin UPS in years gone by too... The batteries need replacing every 3 or 4 years.

I think it depends how much of your setup you want to power in the event of a power failure. I use a small one - 500va and just use it for the external hard drives and sensitive bits such as the mixer and decks.

For a UPS to be of any practical use to power an amplifier/powered speakers it would have to be quite big and heavy.

Taking into consideration that the most likely cause of damage to electronic equipment is a power surge when the power comes back on, I also use RCDs that power off when the power is cut so that I can turn the amps off and turn the gain down to zero before switching the power back on.

I use a Belkin unit with 3 IEC outlets. I think its one of the samller ones they do and will power up to 400 watts but it has been a godsend not just in the house but I have used it in gig environments to protect the HDDs.

I used to rent a house with what turned out to have very poor electrics. The UPS must have saved me a fortune in knackered drives with the amount of power cuts I had in 6 months. Very useful little things and I think mine was only £34.99 from PC world when I bought it, although I think they cost a bit more now. Never needed to replace the battery either which is good as the battery packs can cost as much as a brand new unit.

yes it is the battery in the PC. No need to cover anything else as the HDD is powered from the PC. No point in keeping the mixer powered up as the amps will go down. Even with LED the lights draw to much power.

For Marquee jobs I always take some white emergency lights which are battery backed up which are god send if the genertor fails
