If I buy a light from a well known German company can you just cut the 2 pin plug of and put our uk 3 pin plug on

Yep you are more than welcomed to do so. Its better than those wonky wobbly adapters. Only thing that I would effect is the 30 day money back guarantee.

There is a lot of presumption here that these lights are designed to work at 230v.
I know that this is more than likely the case but you should still always double check the voltage before changing the plug on any piece of equipment.

They should IF they are a consumer device.

Replace with a UK plug by a "competent" person

At every PAT test, my tame sparky whips out his side cutters at the first sign of any kit without a UK plug, and cuts the little blighter off. :D If the other end which connects to the fixture is in fact an IEC, then it matters little to any warranty.

Don't quote me on this, but I think I've seen somewhere where said German retailer are not bothered by anyone fitting UK connectors to their kit. (As long as it's fitted correctly, by a competent person , obviously )

It does however only state that it's the money back part voided, rather than the actual warranty. Also, re possibly needing an original power supply for enabling repairs, as I said, if it's a detachable one, simply replace the whole thing with a UK one, rather than swap the plug, and keep the original just in case.
